I booked this hotel for 3 reasons.
It was the halfway point in my 18 hour journey It is located right off of the interstate I have ALWAYS trusted the quality of a Holiday Inn Express
Upon arrival the lady who greeted me was friendly. When I got to my room I was a little thrown off by the smell ( it smelled like ketchup chips and beef ) but I figured I’d just turn on the fan in the room and it would go away.
I’d been driving for about 9 hours and so my plan was to have a quick shower and grab something to eat before bed. As I walked into the bathroom I was almost knocked out by the smell of Urine. The bathroom quite literally smelt worse than the bathroom in my Kindergarten classroom.
So I skipped the shower and decided to just get food and just talk to the staff. I stopped by the front desk on my way out and chatted with the lady about the bathroom and she said unfortunately there wasn’t anything she could do as the cleaning staff were gone for the evening. I asked if she had bleach because I couldn’t use the washroom, let alone shower in it from the smell… she happily offered me some “ lemon scented disinfectant “.
After dinner I sprayed the bathtub/ shower with the disinfectant spray as well as the toilet and vanity. While spraying the toilet I saw short creepy black hairs ( not mine because I have long brown hair )
I took a white hand towel to just go over the bathtub and make sure it was clean ( because it looked dirty but I understand things stain after use ) I almost passed away when I saw the colour of the white towel after I started wiping the inside of the bathtub.
I did spend about 30 mins scrubbing the shower/bath just so it was sufficiently clean enough for me to have a shower. I did not feel clean after the shower because the smell of urine was in my nostrils/ lungs. It’s safe to say the “ lemon scented disinfectant “ wasn’t effective.
To say I’m offended would be an understatement, I could have stayed at a motel 8 and had a cleaner/ less stressful experience.
I hate to leave a bad review because I understand that everyone is just trying to do their best… but under no circumstance is this acceptable… and if you’d prefer a clean space to rest for the night I do not recommend HIE...
Read moreDuring the last few weeks, I've stayed at several Holiday Inn Expresses (Johnson City, Tennessee; Crossville, Tennesse; Hagerstown, Maryland; Chambersburg; Pennsylvania). Chambersburg had the nicest indoor hot tub of all four facilities, although the hours of access really could be lengthened - in that regard, Crossville is better than Chambersburg. The breakfast area was moderately sized; it could have been larger to accommodate the guests at breakfast. My party arrived down to breakfast more than an hour before it would end; I particularly wanted to try the Cinnamon buns that is the Holiday Inn Express' "signature" breakfast item and unfortunately, they were already out and I was told they would not be making any more that day either. We arrived late in the evening, along with a service dog in-training. I did have to wait while the night receptionist called the hotel manager to ask if they would honor our reservation since we had a service dog in-training; in that, a bit more training to the staff might be helpful. Pennsylvania state law treats service dogs in-training with the same status as full-status service dogs, so there should not have been a question about accepting us. Once that matter was resolved, we proceeded to make several trips to bring our belongings in. We slept well; the room was quiet, comfortable and clean. We were not recognized as Priority members and forgot to ask for our complimentary bottles of water, nor were they offered to us. The attendant advised us that three men (hotel guests) had been caught trying to enter rooms on a floor they weren't on, and suggested we use our security lock on our door as they were still...

Katie was there to greet us, and she was very helpful with finding us a comfy room, at a price we were happy with. She was also super friendly, as were all the staff we saw / talked with.
We had a nice suite, at the front of the hotel, which was quite nice for keeping tollway noise away. We heard ZERO road noise in our room. Since we had a suite, we were able to stay for four nights / days quite comfortably, with plenty of room to spread out, with easy access to our things. We brought / used our own pillows, since we had driven, so I can't speak to the pillow comfort, but the bed was very comfortable. I slept pretty well each night, which is saying a lot, since I generally sleep horribly at hotels. Not here, thankfully.
We took advantage of the complimentary breakfast each morning. My husband's favorite thing was the pancake maker! LOL. He was thrilled to be able to quickly "make" three pancakes each day. I took advantage of the healthier choices: eggs, bananas and apples, juice....okay, and ONE pancake.
The only slight "negatives", which I think another guest or two have mentioned, would be the dim lighting in the bathroom, and we did have a very faint smoke smell in the hallway and bathroom, but it never went into the suite / sitting area / bed area at all. We didn't even mention it to the staff, since neither of these "negatives" was that big of a deal to us.
Overall, we were QUITE happy with our stay, and will definitely stay here again when...
