For the price, this is tough to recommend.
Pros: Incredible location. It’s a ways away from the subway but is totally walkable from Clark with luggage. Tons of fun things to do in the area, great restaurants are very close by.
It was clean. No complaints at all regarding the cleanliness of the room.
Neutral: Front desk staff upon check in and checkout were great, very personable, and friendly. Late night, not so much from my experience.
Our view was straight into someone else’s room across the alley. This wouldn’t be a big deal, but the room was either pitch black, or someone can see you through the thin material behind the curtains. 3 sides of the hotel won’t have this issue, but we did. I get it’s a high rise in the middle of the city, hence why it’s neutral. You have a 1 in 4 chance of having no view at all.
Bad: The room we stayed in had a single night stand. I’ve never seen that in a king room before. This was incredibly inconvenient as both phones, water bottles, and e readers had to go to one side of the bed.
The only light in the bed area was on a single side of the bed as well. I’ve stayed at much cheaper hotels without this issue
Our toilet paper hadn’t been replaced, so we were left with 1 1/8 rolls upon arrival. Not a huge deal, but don’t expect that in a hotel at this price point.
Our room only had 2 towels when we arrived. Front desk sent up more, but what hotel at this price only gives you two towels?
The comforter was paper thin. Something you’d use in the summer in a farm house. No weight to it. We had to request 2 more for our room because I like it cold and my partner does not.
The NOISE. My god the walls and windows to the outside are paper thin. Even on the 8th floor the noise was atrocious. Also, you will hear your neighbors slamming doors all night because some of the doors do not appear to have dampers.
The rooftop bar might be fun if you’re into clubbing. I was expecting a nice romantic rooftop escape and instead got essentially a night club on the 4th floor. This area is why we chose this location. We went up (through a separate elevator with a bouncer AND a dress code) and were greeted with a night club atmosphere. We immediately went back to our rooms.
The Mediterranean restaurant downstairs had possibly the worst hotel bar service I’ve ever had. I was looking to grab a drink and a snack while my partner got ready for the night. It wasn’t busy in the restaurant. Bartender took over 10 minutes to come over to me. I ordered a drink and waited and waited and waited for them to come back to ask me how I was doing, if I wanted food, etc. I ended up finishing my drink thinking they’d come ask me if I wanted another one, but instead just had a bill plunked down in front of me with zero interaction. The guy next to me had left about 15 minutes prior to this and the bar space sat there with his dirty dishes the entire time. At one point, in plain view of the bartender, the previous patron’s reciept blew off of the bar because the outside door was open. Bartender watched me get up, chase the reciept, and return it to the bar and secure it with the silverware left behind. The bartender watched all of this, saw it safely get back to the bar, and then just went about their business. No thank you, no nothing. Should’ve just let it blow away. This was the worst part of this stay, and at almost $20 for a single Jameson, I expect a hell of a lot better service than that.
All in all, the room felt like it was only ever intended for a single person in town for a convention. Very disappointed overall, and definitely not worth what I paid. We have stayed in several hotels in prominent downtown neighborhoods across the country, and this one may be the biggest letdown. It’s better than a motel, but that’s about the best I...
Read moreKatherine and I recently stayed at the Godfrey hotel as a result of my company party that occurred a few blocks away. Overall, the staff was very friendly. It would be nice to have bell hops in which I saw none. I was happy to go grab the luggage carrier and load my own luggage from the curb and bring it inside but when bad weather occurs, it would probably be a lot nicer to have a regular bellhop especially since the Godfrey is located on a semi busy side street downtown. I would rate the hotel at about a four-star hotel at best. Probably 3 3/4 because of certain amenities not provided. Overall, the hotel is a clean, modern, semi eclectic decorated hotel. There is a very nice restaurant and bar area on the fourth floor where you can also go outside and enjoy the outdoors and the views.
Our room was located on the 13th floor, and overall it was not a very large room, but with that said, I was impressed at the hotels use of the space, and thankfully the majority square footage was used for the very nicely appointed more modern bathroom with a sizable shower and counter area and decent lighting . The bed was decently comfortable, but more like a full size bed than an actual queen. There is a little fridge in the room and a bar sink and coffee maker. There is also a safe in the closet. The view was pretty cool, and we liked the angle cross beam structure at the window.
There is a clean little gym on the fifth floor and a little spa area.
Overall, when we needed something, somebody from the hotel, staff came to our room immediately.
My recommendations to the management staff and housekeeping would be to check that the phones are put back on the carriers and that they have an ample charge. Our phone was dead as a door nail and I couldn’t even call downstairs . I had to initially use my own cell phone to call the hotel desk.
I appreciate how the hotel was able to handle the large amount of guests from my company staying at the hotel. Overall it was a pleasant experience.
One major major major negative occurred when I checked out with the valet. In hindsight, they apologized, but I have to give a warning to anyone using the valet at that hotel. In some respects, I appreciate that for whatever reason the valet parked my car in some type of reserve spot as I was told; but a staffer (at the garage or structure where my car was apparently kept) put a 1 ft.² / 12“ x 12“ MASSIVE sticker on my driver side window – – to establish that the car was there from the valet for the hotel.
Are you kidding me?! When I went to check out with the valet, FOUR couples that showed up after me, got their cars before me …and TWICE I kindly spoke with the valet and they said …”Your car is coming.” I had a bad feeling something was up. When I finally got my car 27 minutes later!—-I was horrified!
All the adhesive and shredded paper from this big 1 ft.² sticker was all over my driver’s window and you could tell somebody had made a feeble attempt to get it off my car.
I was NOT happy. I asked the staff to get me a cleaning bottle and a rag, and even though they volunteered to help take it off, I chose to hand scrub it off my window and it took about 7-8 minutes.
I just could not believe this happened. The garage where my car was kept could’ve easily put that sticker (WITHOUT removing the backing) on the INSIDE dashboard; and then when they got my car they could’ve removed it.
This was B.S, wrong, and like something a seedy tow yard might do. This needs to be changed!
I would’ve asked for a major credit to the hotel if I had to pay for it. My company should be reimbursed...
Read moreCurrently guests as we leave this review. My partner and I rented a room at the Godfrey Hotel for a Saturday night while I’m in Chicago for business. We liked the look and vibes of the hotel online, and the location was ideal in regard to local activities and attractions in case we had more time to explore. We chose this hotel based on overall positive reviews regarding the rooms & bed comfort being reasonable and the location being convenient for the price. Initial service upon check-in was great. Parking is expensive ($52 for self-park), but that’s neither here nor there; it’s Chicago. Our issue is that guests down the hall from us were literally yelling while partying for HOURS and the hotel did virtually nothing about it. We called the front desk 3 times, two of which were WELL past 10pm “quiet hours” (2nd call was around 10:45, and 3rd call was around 11:50pm or so). The first noise complaint call we made was before that, being around 9:50pm. We were told the first two times we called that security would be sent up to give them warnings. We listened while the security officer gave them a slap on the wrist and no real consequence. The third time, we were told that CPD was being called to escort the guests out for excessive noise. We were also told after the FIRST complaint that if the noise continued, these guests would be asked to leave. They were never asked to leave, and CPD never came.
My partner came down with a fever and we’ve had to stay in for the night, but despite turning up the volume on our tv to try to drown out the obnoxious noise, we could still hear these guests SHOUTING over our tv. We had to pause the on-demand movie we paid $20+ for so many times to wait for these people to quiet down that we ran out of pauses (didn’t even know that was a thing) and had to just deal with listening to the noise over our movie thereafter.
Finally, by almost 1am, realizing the hotel really wasn’t going to do anything about the unnecessary noise levels, we went to the front desk in person and requested WE be moved to a separate floor. We are in a hotel in a big city, so we expect to hear some noise. What we did NOT expect—nor pay for—was the obscenely loud yelling and obnoxious music (the music was turned down after the 2nd complaint at least). We were 2 doors down, so any rooms adjacent to these guests would’ve been far more hellish to be in. The hotel did not offer any refunds or room relocation, and their security was completely ineffective in controlling the behavior.
The only reasons we even give 3 stars overall is because A) the beds are reasonably comfortable and the rooms themselves have felt clean enough, B) the location of the hotel itself is reasonable and C) the woman we spoke to when we finally got fed up enough and went to the front desk in person did not argue when we requested we either be refunded or moved to a separate floor. After three hours of this ordeal after quiet hours when we paid for a hotel room to ultimately have somewhere to SLEEP, some kind of alternative accommodation should’ve been offered to us in the first place if they clearly weren’t ever intending to actually penalize the guests that were being far too rowdy. As we explained to the hotel staff, we are not ones to rain on someone else’s parade, but we also didn’t pay almost $200 to be kept up all night. We didn’t appreciate being virtually lied to about the handling of the situation, and we don’t appreciate having to go out of our way to request being moved in the first place. The whole ordeal was just...
