If there were an Emmy for recreating superb hospitality from a by-gone era, then Cadie Camp, owner of The Old Powder House Inn would surely be a winner! As soon as we arrived, we felt the warmth and thoughtfulness of Cadie’s hospitality. From the ice coffee served on arrival on a warm St. Augustine afternoon, to the Turkish towels and robes in the spotless, charmingly decorated room, to the freshly baked cookies and brownies in the parlor, to the carafes of brandy and cabernet set out, the hospitality welcomes guests warmly to The Old Powder House Inn. And then there are Cadie’s delicious breakfasts, prepared each morning in the full kitchen and served with linen napkins on antique china plates from Cadie’s family collection. Not only all of this, but when we had difficulty finding the Inn, (I don’t use GPS) Cadie stood outside on the street with her phone and guided us right up to the front porch! The Inn exudes the vintage comfort of the last century and more, as its history goes back to 1901, when the present house, a large turn-of-the-19th century bungalow with huge, welcoming porches and a garden patio, was moved to the site of an ancient ammunition storage, or “powder house,” of St. Augustine’s Spanish colonial era. Later a rooming house, the Inn continues to exude an aura of the 1920s and ‘30s, although now refurbished and equipped with new bathrooms, air conditioning, even “white noise” players. The Old Powder House Inn’s quiet location a few blocks west of the St. John’s River basin is ideal for visitors who want to leave their car parked in the Inn’s back lot and explore the historic district of St. Augustine on foot, or via the many open-air tour trains and lorries in operation. Most of the Historic District’s restaurants, shops, and museums are within a short stroll of the Inn. In short, we highly recommend The Old Powder House for a delightful stay of any length in Old St. Augustine, and even if we can’t give Cadie an Emmy for her hospitality, we can award her five stars for best Bed and Breakfast in St. Augustine! Read moreThis was my very first time staying at a bed and breakfast. I have to say this place was an incredible spot to stay in St Augustine. It's less than 2 block from the shopping strip and 5 minutes away from everything else. John and Katie are fantastic hosts and welcome you like family. The breakfast does rotate daily and they provide fresh and local ingredients from St Augustine. They are extremely accommodating as there was a couple at another table who had a gluten allergy and was able to make the exact dish we had gluten free. The snacks and beverages were a nice addition that they offered in the afternoon. Now the moment you have been waiting...the room. We originally booked the memories room, but since a friend of our wanted to join us last minute (without the other person telling me lol), I was able to call the place and they were able to switch me out to the garden room (Note:this room accommodates up to 4 guests). The garden room is located upstairs in the home next to the public balcony. The room was a great size to accommodate the three of us and the bathroom was elegant and spacious. The room did have two ceiling fans (one where the queen bed is and the other in the twin beds room), an ac unit box, and a fan in the room that is in the twin beds room. The room was a little warm when we arrived but once the ac unit was cranked down, it was satisfying. The beds were comfortable like a bed in a standard hotel. I was still able to sleep. Overall, I will definitely return to this establishment as we are making plans in November or December. Thank you John and Katie for your hospitality and making my first time at a bed and breakfast a memorable...
Read moreFirst time using a B & B, probably will be the last. Was advised check in envelope was inside the drawer of the desk area on the front porch which was accessible to anyone in the area. Got the key, opened the door to the room we had reserved and discovered property belonging to someone else in the room. Either a stay over guest or ??? Made a phone call to the listed number as there is no one in the office or in the area. Short time later, Heather called me and said she was on her way to the building and would take care of the problem. Someone, don't know who, put two guests into the room I reserved for my wife and myself. I booked Memories 8 because of the king size bed and the spacious room area. Heather showed us another room with a king side bed but the room was like a closet with the king size bed. Totally unacceptable. Went back downstairs and out onto the front porch. Lo and behold, two older women were now seated out there and it turned out they were the ones whose belongings were in our reserved room. Heather, thank God for Heather, explained the situation and the two women graciously vacated our room. The room was large, comfortable and welcoming. The bed was very comfortable. I'm 6'5", weigh 270 and had a great nights sleep. Coffee service starts at 9 A/M, breakfast at 9:30 A/M. Too late for us. We left around 6 A/M. If it wasn't for Heather and the way in which she dealt with the situation, I would've given the B & B experience 2 stars. Heather...
