Oh, Prohibition Kitchen, you are one of my favorite restaurants in St Augustine. The live bands, the music, the crowd, the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, and the service are always exceptional. However, last night was a hard miss for me with service. It was very busy as usual so I had a couple drink orders for myself, my husband, and a friend since I was able to squeeze through some patrons and reach the bar while my husband and friend stood behind me. I was able to order two out of the three drinks. I handed my card to the bartender and I noticed he kept messing with the machine, swiped my card multiple times, and he was talking to another bartender while doing so. Looked like trouble shooting to me. This took some time for him. He came back, handed me my card and said that he tried multiple times and it just wasn't going through and if I have another card. I reached over to my husband and asked him for the exact SAME card, exact SAME account I have, only his card says his name instead of mine. Handed it to the bartender while saying I have one more drink order for my friend here so could you add that please. Bartender walked away with the card, swiped, printed receipt out and handed them both to me. I then repeated the drink order to him that I was missing and he looked at me and said "No, I have other people to take care of" then proceeded to ignore me while he took other people's order even after he was done with them, he still did not look my way. So, I walked away, very much filled with disappointment and a bit of anger at this point. I told my friend I couldn't get her drink and she said it was alright. I continued to enjoy my night but avoided that bartender at all cost for the remainder of the evening. I'm pretty sure the chip on my card was acting up since my husbands worked so I assume it wasn't their machine afterall. However, whatever thought process was going through the bartenders mind I still did not deserve to be treated like that. I will continue to visit Prohibition Kitchen because they really do live up to the hype but I will forever be tainted by that one man's actions towards me and I will never give him even the slightest possibility of...
Read moreOne cannot visit St Augustine without a visit to the prohibition kitchen right on Main Street in old town. This cool little restaurant really latched on to the idea of a speakeasy from the twenties from the decor to even the menus which looked like newspapers. Even the staff walk around in Dress and grooming to give you the feeling like you went back in time. The seating on the upper and lower levels is very well lit and makes you feel comfortable and at times, the live music is very appropriate for your dining experience albeit sometimes a bit on the loud side for conversation. As for the menu, it has lots of selections and some of them are unique to the menu selections you would find at normal restaurants one of them being the poutine. We ordered the poutine as a starter which is french fries covered in brown gravy and cheese curds. They were very good and apparently you can get a premium version of it where they add pork belly and other toppings to it. On this visit, I ordered the chicken wings and my wife ordered the mac and cheese with chicken and broccoli. The chicken wings were quite tasty and even a minor detail that many overlooked is that the ranch dressing had a nice hint of Dill seasoning in it to freshen it up. The wings were quite tasty and my wife said she enjoyed her mac and cheese. This is a great restaurant to bring a date or just enjoy a night out in beautiful St Augustine. The only thing that I will warn you is that there is almost always a rather long wait to get into this establishment and as a result, sometimes your service is not as prompt as you would like it.. when you are finished with your meal, it's evident that the staff wants you to give up your table as soon as possible. I will also say that the menu items are not cheap so don't expect a nice meal on a budget... expect to spend in the neighborhood of 25 to $30 per person and that does not include drinks...just water. Otherwise, if money is no problem and you are only focused on enjoying a unique restaurant that you can only find on the main strip in historic Saint Augustine, this...
Read moreHad dinner with a large group of 8 people last Saturday. Being the weekend after Thanksgiving and the Nights of Lights in full swing, it was very crowded. There was a long wait of about 2 hours for us to get a table. We put our name down and walked around for a bit, then came back for a pager after about 45 minutes, because they were all out. We ended up getting seated in about an hour and forty five minutes from when we arrived. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our server was great, and the food and drinks as well. I had a couple of old fashioned, which were great. We also ordered pretzel, beer cheese soup, and mac and cheese with shrimp. Everything tasted great, I especially liked the beer cheese soup. We also had the short rib grilled cheese, which was my favorite. As well as the mushroom burger. Another great selection.
This was our first time there, but most certainly not the last. Service was great, food was great, drinks were great, and the live entertainment was as well. We did have one negative experience, but I won’t put that on the establishment itself. There’s a guy that goes around taking pictures of your group, then comes back around to show you the picture and offer you them for purchase. This guy was a real piece of work. Extremely rude and condescending, and was a real jerk when he came around and we told him we would think about whether or not we wanted to purchase any of the pictures he took. Twice he came around and made rude comments about us wasting his time, and that he wouldn’t come back to our table if we didn’t make up our minds because he didn’t have time for that. He almost single-handedly ruined our otherwise awesome experience. He’s an independent contractor that doesn’t work directly for the restaurant. So I won’t put this on them. However the way this guy talks to their patrons, I wouldn’t want anywhere near my customers. I spoke to a very nice manager that was there at the time and let her know what occurred. We love this place and plan to go back regularly, but hope they don’t have that guy...
