We needed to get away and decided on this Bed & Breakfast based on a friend's recommendation. We stayed in room 7 on the 3rd floor.
Location It's as close to St George street as you can get! The inn is tucked right behind a very tasty ice cream parlor (and) a restaurant with an outdoor bar & live band (both on St George street). The inn is centrally located in relationship to St George street. We valued that a lot as we could get anywhere with ease.
Our Room Excellent condition and very romantic. Everything was clean, and well taken care of. I preordered chocolate covered strawberries in our reservation and they were waiting for us. Delicious. Our room featured an "oversized jacuzzi tub for two" that was fabulous. Jets and everything! Some hotels have a little fold on the toilet paper.. this B&B had a beautiful bow tie! We still can't figure out how they did that!
The Live Band Some rooms of the inn face the live band and some rooms do not. The band consists of a guitarist/singer and a fiddler. Excellent musicians. Our room was quite literally just feet away from this band. We could look down from our window and see patrons of the outdoor bar at a picnic table. Not a problem, except the curfew for the band is 11pm. That's better than after midnight, but we couldn't even consider going to sleep until after 11pm from the amped music. I did walk to the other side of the inn and it's considerably quieter. The website room description did say "Acoustic music may be heard from the nearby cafe". If you are a light sleeper, I'd consider getting a room on the EAST side of the inn (descriptions that do not mention the acoustic music).
Check In There wasn't a whole lot of information on check in or check out, other than check in is between 3pm and 8pm. When we arrived, we didn't know the procedure. I had to call in to get the following information. If you are arriving, there is a parking lot across the little street from the inn with a parking space marked "Agustin Inn". This spot is for checkin only. We were met with a very nice lady from the inn who greeted us, checked us inn and helped us carry our bags to our room. She was fantastic the entire stay. After check-in, I had to move my car to one of the official parking spots. No big deal. Since this is right on St George street, its very important to park in their free spaces otherwise you could get ticketed or towed. Check out was a little confusing. We didn't know who to give the key to. We gave it to one of the waitresses and hoped for the best.
After Hours Access There are doors with code locks everywhere. If you need to get in, just type the code and open the door. That's it! Pretty easy and effortless. They also had some treats (cookies, muffins) in a dish after hours. One of my favorites was bacon wrapped biscuits. Yum.
Final Thoughts We would stay here again. Next time, I'd stay in room 5 (3rd floor). It's out of the way of everything and on the opposite side of the band. If you want to stay on St George street, this...
Read moreI rarely post negative reviews, but the generally high ratings for this b&b are what led me to book it, and I’d like others to skip that disappointment.
The good: (1) The location is fantastic if you’re planning to spend most of your time in downtown (which I was). (2) The approximately $300 per night rate is reasonable for this time of year (Nights of Lights) compared with the bigger hotels. (3) It’s pretty clean for an old room that needs updating. (4) The staff was easy to get a hold of before check in. (5) Parking is decent given the location ($10 per day charge).
The bad: (1) It’s bright and noisy. Given the fact that it’s an older building in a downtown neighborhood, that’s not surprising, but some decent black out curtains would be a big help. (2) It’s old and rundown. The bathroom in our room appeared clean, but the paint and some of the plaster was peeling, the tub needs to be replaced or at least refinished, there are old water stains on the ceiling, the grout needs replacing, the shower curtain rings and rod are rusty—that kind of stuff. The shower insert was also bowing out from the wall and that probably means there’s some gross stuff growing there. (3) Probably because of the shower issue described in #2, the room SMELLS musty and like mildew. (4) The bed wasn’t particularly comfortable, but I get that everyone has different preferences for that. However, the cheap, scratchy sheets (and towels) don’t help. (5) WE HAD TO TAKE COLD SHOWERS. We took several showers during our stay, and neither of us ever had hot water. We took showers at various times of day, but regardless of when (and even after running the water for some time), intermittent bursts of warm followed by freezing cold was as good as it got. That’s an absolute baseline amenity, especially at $300 a night. The water pressure was also terrible (and the shower head needs repair). (6) The ceiling fan stopped working at random intervals and the ceiling fan light came on in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. (7) There’s no independent control over the temperature of the heat / air and we were roasted all weekend during a Florida cold snap. I don’t think the lack of control over the temperature is an unusual thing for a B&B, but be advised nonetheless—I shudder to think what that means for the a/c settings during the summer.
Overall, I didn’t feel unsafe and it’s clear the staff cleans they best they can (actually, they charge a $10 a day cleaning fee, which is weird), but the building needs updates and it wasn’t a comfortable stay. I definitely won’t...
Read moreThis is a well-earned 3 stars. I want to give a very honest review with some warnings/recommendations. The ability to be right on the main street just by going downstairs is a big plus. The front desk lady is either the owner or she is really bought in. She is unbelievably kind and generous. The room we had was great. Small room on the 3rd floor. Normal sized bedrooms for these old homes. The big tub was nice. I saw complaints about being dated and I saw some gaps in caulking and minor things. Nothing I'd complain about. Here's the warnings/recommendations. There is no parking at the facility. It's about a quarter of a mile away. Short walk but should be known. What I didn't like is this is something clearly disguised on their website. They make it sound like you get your own parking space. No. It's access to the Tolomato lot. It is clearly intentional that they are not up front about this. This is the first of their nickel and dime procedures. This could just be included in the pricing of the room. Which brings me to my next thing. Why on earth is there a cleaning fee? AND A DAILY ONE AT THAT IF THEY DONT CLEAN DAILY. If you stay for 2 days or 6 days the cleaning procedures are the same. Why is it daily? Honestly, why at all? Again, should be in the price of the room. And definitely NEVER a daily fee. Then they have a sign asking for tips in the room. I'd say that's what the $10 a day is for. Next, this is an "inn that served breakfast" not a bed and breakfast in the manner of the traditional homemade breakfast. They serve frozen Costco quiche and other microwavable items you get at warehouse grocery stores. It's ok and I don't mean to complain about that but it should be worth knowing in case you've been to a traditional BandB. There is a jar of cookies. There's a keurig outside the halls . Here's the thing you really need to know. There is a live music bar right below, this building. IT WILL BE LOUD UNTIL 9 PM ON WEEKNIGHTS AND 11 PM ON WEEKENDS. that's not the inns fault at all. You should know. I opened my window and sang along. Others may not. Bring a noise machine. Something if that will be a problem. Because it's not "if" you hear it. You will. Again, this is a well earned 3 stars. Definitely not a 5. And the weird cleaning fee and not being upfront about parking knocked it down one more. The other items I mentioned are just "up to you" Didn't bug me too bad. I did have...
