We chose this hotel because we (my wife, 22 month old daughter and I) were flying in from CA and arriving after midnight and wanted to do some shopping at the Galleria before heading to visit my family for an early holiday celebration in Monticello.
We finally got to the hotel at 1:30 and were tired and ready to sleep. I checked in at the front desk and the bellman helped my wife take our bags up to our room while I went to park the car. I was told I could park behind the building in the parking structure. I parked and tried to get into the building using the rear entrance which would not open. I then had to walk around to the front on the building and enter the front door. Mind you I was wearing no jacket and flip flops and it was snowing out.
The room was fine, we asked for a suite upgrade since we were platinum but there wasn’t one available. The room had a nice seating area with a sofa and chairs and was perfect for a one night stay. We then got settled and were ready for bed around 2:30 am. Fast forward to 8am. I hear a knock on my door and then I hear someone opening my door. The maid was coming to clean the room!!!! I got up and asked if she was kidding me and she said no. I then told her to leave us alone and that we only went to sleep 5 hours earlier and were still on California time (6am). She left. I got dressed and went downstairs and asked for a manager and told him of my frustrating and then left to go back to my room.
On the way back I stopped on the 7th floor and visited the platinum members lounge to get a soda to drink. There weren’t many options available at the time I was up there and the pastry I ate was stale. I left to get back into the elevator to go back to my floor and noticed a piece of cheese on the table next to the elevator. It must have been there from the night before. I then went to open my door on the 4th floor and my room key didn’t work. I then had to go back to the front desk to get a different key and then back up to my room to sleep for a couple of hours more.
Around 11am we were up and ready to go shopping. I called down and requested a 4pm checkout and that was granted to me with no problems at all. We left and used the convenient underground tunnel to the Galleria and had lunch and shopped for a couple of hours.
We then made our way back to our room around 2pm to pack up and check out. We got back up the 4th floor and our room key again didn’t work. I had to go back to the front desk and I was told that was because I requested a late check out and the key was only good until noon. My question would be then why would it work in the elevator (this doesn’t happen at other hotels)? I requested they send a bellman up in 15 min and I got the new key and headed back up to our room to pack. While my wife was packing I decided to head back up to the 7th floor to grab a can of soda from the club lounge. Again when I got out of the elevator I noticed the same piece of cheese that was sitting there 6 hours earlier.
The bellman showed up and was very nice and professional. He apologized for the 8am intrusion to our room. He followed me down with my bags and I pulled my car around to the front and he helped me load my bags into the car. My wife and daughter waited in the lobby for the car to warm up and I soon joined them. While we were standing there waiting we were approached by the manager I spoke with at 8am. He said he was again very sorry about the maid entering my room at 8am. He then proceeded to explain that most of their customers are business travelers and that they are usually out of the room by that time. He closed by saying that he hopes we stay again and if we chose to he suggests we put the do not disturb on the door and than said thanks and walked away.
While I think this hotel has a great location I think the attitude of the management is poor. I think the staff is polite and professional. But don’t tell me when I am staying in a $200.00+ a night hotel that I need to put a do not disturb on my door to prevent a maid from waking me and my family up at 8am. I think that is in poor form and too early. The upside is we likely won’t be returning to this hotel so we won’t have to worry about it. There are plenty of other great Starwood properties in the...

ROOM: Was upgraded to a CLUB SUITE. Thank you BRANDON. The room was beautiful and located on the 6th floor. The suites at this hotel are located in the corner and have a great view of the GALLERIA MALL. The room had a living room fully equipped with sofas and other paraphernalia. It also had a dining table to seat 6 people. Two bathrooms and a tub along with a separate bedroom. This room felt like a fully equipped apartment.
CHECK IN PROCESS: Was smooth and easy with a very courteous front desk agent.
DINING: I had reservations to dine at McCormick's and Schmick's located within the hotel. I arrived was dinner at 2030 hrs and they were seating reservations for 1930 hrs. The restaurant was packed to capacity and I could barely walk inside. It was a zoo of people at the restaurant. I decided not to wait and went back to my room and ordered the same menu that is served at McCormicks's and Schmick's in my room and it was delivered within 10 minutes.
IN ROOM DINING: Was a beautiful private Valentine's Day experience. The food arrived promptly and was delivered by Ms Sanchez who was very sweet and courteous. I was also provided with complimentary champagne and dessert as an in room amenity. Thank you Westin Staff.
CHECK OUT PROCESS: Very smooth and effortless. Thank you SARAH.
CONCIERGE: Thank you BRANDON and FEY.
RECOMMENDATIONS: I highly recommend this SPG Hotel but I DO NOT recommend dining at McCormick's and Schmick's on VALENTINES DAY. You will be disappointed. Its best to dine in your room privately under candle light with roses. But the menu from McCormick's and Schmick's is phenomenal. I did eat lunch post Valentines Day and it was much more relaxed with no overcrowding.
OVERALL: Highly recommended SPG Hotel in the Twin Cities and it is amongst my most favorite hotels. I would say that this is the BEST SPG choice in MSP along with another SPG brand located in Downtown Minneapolis. Also this is more a family oriented hotel and if you are looking for a party atmosphere then this is not the hotel for you and you should look to staying at another SPG brand property in Downtown Minneapolis..This hotel is for relaxation and...
Read moreThe rooms are comfortable. But my experience at Westin has by far been the worst my whole life. I reached the hotel to check in at around 12:30 midnight due to a flight delay. I was informed that someone had to extend their room on an emergency basis and that they had no room to offer to me. I was informed at the front desk that I would have to go to a Homewood suites a few minutes away by car and that if I were to start driving, there would be a room ready by the time I get there. This was after I reminded them that I was waiting for more than a few minutes for them to sort out out at 12:30 midnight. I get to Homewood only to learn that there wasn't a room available and when I called, I was told I left before they were able to confirm. I just want to say that they had all the time between when my room was extended until I arrived at Westin at 12 to block a room for me at another place. So I was then asked to go to a Marriott Southwest and I finally checked in at 1:30 am - ish. When I returned to Westin the next day (because I was in town for two days and Westin only requested a room at Southwest for 1 Day), I was left 6 macaroons and 2 sparkling waters as compensation. As a business, there were several options available to Westin to have made my experience slightly better: 1) an email could have been sent as soon as they knew that my room wasn't available and then proceed to block a room in another hotel immediately 2) a call could have been made to inform ahead of time 3) they could have provided an upgraded room instead of making a person go to 2 other hotels in the middle of the night (I was informed that a club suite was available) But instead, they choose to give me 6 macaroons and sparkling water. Please, do your job in the first place - that night, I needed a roof over my head, not macaroons and water the next day. A hotel is for comfort, you never know what a person has gone through that day. At a minimum, a business centered on hospitality should be hospitable. To top it all off, during check out, I was asked how my experience was while they very well have on record the fiasco that occurred. No more Westin Edina for myself or anyone...
