I'm an older traveler so I reserved a private room upstairs on the recommendation of my son who enjoyed his stay here. The price is great compared to other accommodations in Kailua/Kona. I called the hostel to let them know I would be late checking in because the line at Hertz was glacially slow (1.5 hours, insane, don't use them!). Josh was wonderful about staying late at the desk. The hostel has a funky vibe, upstairs rooms are good-sized with common kitchen with fridge and stove (it's best to bring your own plate and cup). You can see the ocean from the deck. There's also a resident gray cat that hangs around the stairs. The private room I had was lockable, with shared full bath and kitchen and lounge area. Fans in the bedroom made the room livable in September heat, though the last two days were uncomfortably muggy. A cool shower in the clean bathroom helped with sleeping but I did think about getting a hotel room with a/c that last day. I would stay here again though maybe in a cooler part...

I wasn't game enough to go out at dark.||The lockers were at the top of the dark staircase ( no light) & you had to slide a wooden door up to put your belongings in and lock with your padlock.||The kitchen had 1 bowl. I asked reception if there were any more and was told to go to another kitchen upstairs and use theirs. Same for saucepans.||You had to remove shoes upon going inside, same as every other hostel/backpackers I went to in Hawaii, however I never saw this floor mopped in the 5 days I was there, so my feet were dirty from the floor.||Someone from my dorm had to sleep in her car the 1st night because she couldn't get in at 11pm when she arrived.
