We arrived to the Hyatt Regency Maui and were instantly impressed. It's quietly tucked into the very end of the road. As you enter the hotel you're greeted with an open air check in. The team was all absolutely wonderful. Check in took a few minutes and we were greeted with Lei's and a special wristband for being World of Hyatt Globalist. The wristband served as our room key but got us discounts at various locations around the campus. Additionally it got us access to places like the Regency club that you would otherwise have to pay an extra fee for. We were visiting for our Anniversary so we received a welcome gift of Champagne which was really nice.
The room was beautiful, We had a room on the 7th floor overlooking the Regency pool and beach. There was plenty of space and the attention to detail was very evident in the design of the room. It definitely screamed luxury everywhere you looked from the sensor lights under the bed to the decor around the room.
House keeping was probably the best I've seen anywhere. The room had a Keurig and a mini fridge and if needed you can request a microwave and wine glasses or any other items you may need.
The Regency campus was phenomenal. I walked from the Regency to Whalers Village and no other hotel complex is even remotely close to as beautiful as the Regency. The wildlife they have is amazing! The landscaping is beautiful and the pool is huge. You also get access to the Residence Club pool which is much smaller but way less crowded. Unfortunately the swim up bar in the large pool was under construction for repairs so we missed that. They have a shave ice stand at the large pool that is phenomenal. The Haleakala is my favorite with added toasted coconut.
We ate at all the restaurants in the complex with the exception of the Japengo. They were great, Sonz steakhouse was really good but pricey. The ambience is really nice. I wouldn't recommend trying to figure out dinner plans when you arrive and have reservations set way in advance. There are not enough restaurants for the amount of tourists on the island so you will end up waiting or being turned away like us at Japengo.
They have a small store that has everything you may need in case you forget something. They also have booze so you can limit the $20+ drinks at the bars. And of course they have every souvenir you might need.
They have everything you might need to include a Sunglass Hut. We utilized the concierge, laundry room and Valet. I'm unsure of the Valet cost because our fees were waived. You can self park but I don't know if there's a cost. They have water bottle filling stations on each floor so you can put to use the complimentary water bottles they give you. They do have a spa that offers massage as well as hair services. I did try to email the spa in advance of arriving to schedule a hair appointment for my wife but never received a response back. We did end up scheduling it when we arrived so we were glad they had the availability. I received a massage that was ok. I probably should have opted for the sports massage as the one I received was just a bit too light. My wife did have a cut and color and wasn't entirely in love with the color so that's a bit of a bummer.
The hidden gem is definitely the Regency Club. If you're not a Globalist I suggest you pay for access. It is worth whatever the cost. They serve a breakfast, snack at lunch, appetizers and dessert. The breakfast was an amazing spread each of the 5 days we were there. The coffee machine was great and saved us from waiting in line at the coffee shop down the hall. Appetizer hour could definitely serve as a full meal as they don't mess around! Dessert was great the nights we made. The star of the Regency Club though was Lisa, she was AMAZING! She took her time to make us feel at home and really impressed me when she remembered our names. We made it a point to drop in just to say hi as she really was a great person and even better hostess! I'd schedule another trip just to swing back by and say hi. That's how much she made us...
Read moreThis was our first Hawaii trip and we chose Hyatt after a lot of research on type of beach and level of comfort we can expect. Overall the hotel experience was really good. We had a few disappointments and hence the 4 star rating.||Our check in experience was great - true aloha welcome. The valet was a bit rushed and not the relaxed vibe. The hotel feel when you walk in is great - expansive, airy, bright, green and a peek of the blue ocean welcomes you. Loved it. We chose the ocean front room and it was totally worth it. The view is mesmerising. Great spot to have your morning cup of coffee or afternoon relaxed book read. We got some really nice windy welcome and loved it. ||Had booked spa for myself before check in and it was a good decision. Spa is well appointed but average - not mind blowing :) ||My first call from the room was to order food and service was fast. It was disappointing to see Hyatt is still holding on to the Covid practices of sending food in to go boxes and bags. Really not the 5 star experience one is hoping for and so much wastage. With the push in Hawaii to be eco friendly - i think Hyatt can go back to reusable utensils and cutlery. Not only will it add to the luxury experience one expects for the price but will also be less trash.||Anyway, we ordered in room dining multiple times during our stay and always found the service and people true aloha spirit.||My second call from my room was to the concierge. We had wanted a relaxed time - not planning every minute of the vacation. So thought was to rely on hotel concierge to give us trusted and helpful guidance. I know tours booked through hotels are usually expensive, but being the first time there - we were ok to lean on that. And that was the most disappointing experience of all!! ||To her credit the concierge lady gave me an important pieces of information - snorkel report. This kept us out of the way of the huge waves that can be risky. Apart from that her responses were all but bleak. She really pulled down my spirits over my 3 conversations during the stay. Right away - day 1 she shared the hotel has a bad beach and nothing we can do there. We will have to go to another beach to do anything. This is not what you want to hear on day 1 of an expensive trip. And it is not true. We spent a lot of good time at the beach on Tuesday - and so did many other folks. Not sure why she would say that - seems like either she is not on commission or just not motivated. ||I gave her another chance. Visited her in person the next day and it was equally bad. She claimed there is nothing happening and may be she can try get us something! Seriously!! In Hawaii there is nothing! And she was making it such a big deal to arrange something for us. Really bad experience. Anyway - we walked away and planned our own thing.||I gave her a 3rd chance to book us on a fishing trip on Thursday. And in a heartbeat - her answer was there is nothing available - no boats going out and nothing happening… i was really surprised to hear her consistent dampeners. Right after that i got us a boat for next morning and they had more space!! It was a great experience. I saved some money because the hotel would definitely be more expensive LOL||This repeated experience was really bad. Hyatt should definitely look in to it||The pool side experience was great - we loved it. The service, food, drinks - everything was perfect. And wow the breakfast!! How amazing is the place - beautiful view of the water and great food. The people helping with the seating were so cool - we got a water table everyday!!||Japengo was not that great - but likely we ordered the wrong thing. ||The hotel has a small market and it is quite popular - we bought a few things and saw many others there too. ||Overall - great hotel and good beach. It is a bit small but we had good fun. Some folks were also...
Read moreWe are 24 hours into an 8 night stay. It’s really frustrating to already be willing to give a review on how much of a dumpster fire this experience has been.
The food:
“meh” at best and overpriced. We’ve eaten at 3 different spots here since arriving and each time I was disappointed. Japengo, the poolside bar joint, and the breakfast location. I’m 100% certain the food trucks up the street will have a better environment and better food. Probably better service as well.
Interactions with hotel staff:
First time was with a front desk person. We had incredibly loud people in the room next to us between 3am and 4:30am. The front desk person said there was nothing she could do about it. I told her that I shouldn’t have to knock on a strangers door at 3am to ask them to be quiet but that I would tonight if it happens again. She said she would notify security of the noise complaint, to avoid the interaction. I’m certain she did nothing and the people we share a wall with weren’t even advised. This is a resort, not a college dorm.
Second, at breakfast. This craptacular $40 buffet was already disappointing enough without the “service” interactions. We asked a waitress passing by if the drinks (mimosas, Bloody Mary’s) that we saw on the website for breakfast were included. She said, “I don’t know.” I asked how much they cost, she said “I don’t know I’ll get your waitress.” Keep in mind, this girl is waiting tables, we just weren’t her table. Our waitress comes and I ask her how much. She says, “um, I think maybe $14.” Do you think or do you know? No menu, no competency, no white glove anywhere in site. These aren’t hard questions.
Third, a new interaction with a different front desk rep. This was by far the worst at any vacation resort I’ve been to. She took a turn from incompetent to being outright rude. We ask about a charge to our account we weren’t expecting. This lady argued with us about the difference between a hold and a charge for about five minutes. She used the phrase “like I said” twice and was overall condescending. We left just disappointed. I can’t imagine any self respecting person rebooking here.
I get we are in Hawaii and things have a different price point. We’ve been to the islands many times. We’ll spend somewhere around $10k on this 8 night anniversary trip. I expect the service to be good. I expect the food to be better than an ihop. Hyatt has really dropped the ball on their brand at this location. If I wanted subpar service I would have paid less somewhere else.
Hawaii is gorgeous. This Hyatt has honestly been a let down to what should have been a fantastic vacation. We’ll be on the beach and eating off site. Hopefully we’ll get some sleep with these paper thin walls and rowdy spring break level guests next door. Our Hyatt is essentially a motel 6 this week.
Oh and there’s a huge dead Koi in the pond for whenever you decide to get back to work.
Edit: It’s been maybe 2 hours after posting this review and we’re making the best of it. I am standing next to the African grey talking to my wife about the bird. She owned one years ago for many years. We notice some of its feathers don’t look great and my wife says it looks like he’s been picking them. Bird representative girl shows up out of nowhere to tell us it’s because we are too close. She enters the cage and immediately gets closer to the bird than we were. I guess it’s “put the guests in their place day” here at the Hyatt.
At this point, it’s just funny, the blatant lack of service and disrespect. I don’t remember signing up for a reality TV show and I don’t think Ashton Kutcher still...
