I went here yesterday and absolutely loved it! I loved the 3D room with the bean bag chairs. It had animal views and white noise sounds that were very calming! The information about the history of the whaling industry was also very interesting. I loved the little videos they had in the video room as well as the cinematography was very well done (and that's coming from a cinema major). The plastics area was also very impactful and I loved seeing the art in this area. I also love that they have the venmo option for donation since we don't carry cash with us.
As an self proclaimed environmentalist I absolutely loved this exhibit. The only suggestion for improvement I have is adding more to the beginning exhibits about protecting the animals. As some of the beaches have signs with similar information I think it would be even more impactful if they added the bigger why as to why these rules protect the marine animals. For example touching sea turtles opens them up to infection and disease (and then explain why). Also adding something about the importance of mineral sunscreen and explaining what coral are since there are misconceptions around this would be helpful as well. This honestly could be added next to the current exhibits as I do think some people (especially some tourists might not know these rules). I know there is limited space, but if you can figure out a way to add some facts about the animals as well (maybe in the video room?) that would be cool as well. I love what you guys as an organization are doing please keep up...
Read moreNot really a "discovery center." I would call it a conservation center as it has mountains of great information about Hawaii, wild life, global warming, whaling, and plastics but there was not much devoted to children.
One area in the back (that was smaller than the gift shop) was devoted to coloring, puzzles, and games. Nothing else was designed for kids to touch or play with. The whaling section was potentially dangerous with sharp implements at my toddlers eye level.
A discovery center needs to be able to be touched and played with safely not just loaded with hours of videos on a large...
Read moreThe stars aligned and I happened to be at Whaler's Village on opening day of the Hawai'i Wildlife Discovery Center! It was absolute TREAT! Anthony showed us around the entire museum and he was such a joy to talk to. The projector room is so special, it makes you feel like you are diving in the ocean! I learned so much about Hawai'i's flora and fauna and beautiful culture. This museum is a dream and everyone should visit! It will teach you things that will make you appreciate the beautiful Hawaiian islands even more than before and will inspire you to...
