I absolutely love this resort and have been coming here twice yearly for 7 years. Since COVID, there has been restructuring of staff but it is still a lovely place. The previous bell station staff such as Leo is no longer there. When you arrive, the bell staff will hold on to your luggage and transport to your room. During your stay, they will also assist in bringing your groceries to your unit. You can either valet or park your rental on your own. Free parking passes for your stay are provided at check out and you can either park in the underground parking located to the right on the entrance circle of the main tower or you can park in the parking lot across the street. Check In is typically at 3 pm and there is rarely any early check ins so if your flight arrives prior to that time, be prepared to have your swimsuits ready and enjoy the many pools or walk alongside the boardwalk or beach. I can only comment on the one bedroom room which is spacious. I typically stay at the handicap rooms for wider entry ways to bedrooms and bathrooms. There are deep baths and his/hers bathroom sinks. The patio is nice with a table that sits 6. Pull out sofa is comfortable. The unit has 2 TVs, one in the master and one in the living room with a LG blu ray player. There is washer/ dryer in the unit however, it can be a challenge to operate. There is also a dishwasher and you are supplied soap, detergent and dryer sheets. There is a Cafe with a small market at the main tower (I absolutely love the lavender mocha) and a big market in the other tower. The gym is also in the other tower that consists of your typical cardio machines, leg curls and a pulley tower. This resort is also the only resort I have been to that has 2 Smith machines. You have the beach right in front of you past the pools. Depending on the season, you may come across some tents that sell various tourist items such as hair clips, dresses, hats, sunglasses etc. There are 2 main pools. One in front on the main tower that is a typical pool attached to 2 hot tubs in the back on the left and right sides with an infant pool that is 1.5 feet deep in between. Behind the other tower is the big kids area with a waterfall, ground spouts, infant area, water slide and lazy river. Get there early to get a chair. You can also rent cabanas for a specified time frame but unsure what the cost of that would be. In between the 2 pools, there is equipment rental or purchase goggles or obtain beach towels. In addition, there is Dukes and reservations are recommended. The loco moco and the Caesar salad with fresh fish is my fav. If you want a quieter environment without having to fight the crowds, you can go to one of the small pools on the Villa side. I typically take a Lyft because I just stay at the resort my entire visit and do not need a car. It is 70 bucks one way and way cheaper than a car rental nowadays. They have a shuttle to Lahaina downtown for 2 bucks one way and take cash only. There is a supermarket behind the resort that is walking distance called Times Market alone with food trucks in the evening which makes meals super convenient. They also have Instacart service as well. And what is a resort without a spa but it is pricey. Of course, it's Hawaii so expect even the groceries to be pricey. If you are able to plan ahead and do not need a car and simply enjoy the amenities that the resort offers, it can be a pretty affordable trip. With me and my girl, I only spent 400 dollars for Lyft and food for 5 nights and 6 days. My flight was 490 for both of round trip with Hawaiian as I went 1 week prior to Thanksgiving so all in all, 900 bucks total for both of us is a winning...
Read moreWe booked a very expensive rental with a property management company that has a rental on this resort and there were quite a few disappointments. Some of the issues may have been the property management’s problem, but Honua Kai does service their rentals so they are responsible for some of these issues.
The floor was not cleaned prior to our arrival - our feet were black after a few minutes of walking on it. They had to come clean it which was inconvenient and they only showed up with a mop and no bucket..?! They had to come AGAIN mid-rental to change the air filters (why is this necessary?!) and they left one of them loose, so it made a horrible buzzing noise all night that kept us up. The water heater was really bad. We had 7 people and it was only enough for 1-2 showers before going cold. We had children with us and the hot water couldn’t even fill up half a bath! The ice maker stopped working The place was not stocked with enough cooking utensils Someone on the balcony above us VOMITED ALL OVER our private lanai that we paid extra for. It took them hours to send someone to clean it and the vomit festered in the sun- smelling horribly! They didn’t clean it properly and we had to ask them to come a second time. We let them know prior to our arrival that we needed an extra mattress for our kids and baby. We had to call several times to remind them and they ended up coming so late (9pm) that we had already put the kids to sleep in our bed. They didn’t bring any blankets or pillows with the mattress. The place was not stocked with proper toiletries such as lotion, which would be expected if you’re paying $500+ a night. Washer and dryer did not function properly and had to be ran multiple times. The cleaning fee was horrendous but they do take care of everything so that was one less thing to worry about when leaving! There are not enough spots in the parking garage and we often had to park offsite and walk very far with all 3 children. If renting from a property management company, there should be designated spots. There were not enough seating by the pools for guests!! Even when arriving early, we had to hunt for spots and were usually unable to find them. There is hardly any shade so we had three young children scorching in the sun. The pools and hot tubs are VERY dirty. One was usually the cleanest, so we stuck by that one but they really need to run the cleaner through these pools at night. There is supposed to be pool service but I only saw a server one time in 6 days of being there. Outside alcohol is illegal so it’s hard to get drinks and the bar line was always very long and very slow. The restaurant on site is $30+ per meal and is not very good. I would not recommend eating there and there are not really any vegetarian options. The beach is rocky and unsafe. It’s calmest in the morning and fine once you get past the coral, but do not expect to be able to swim here often. We ended up at Baby Beach most days instead. The hallway reeked of TRASH! The trash was piling up in the communal garbage room and we could hardly stand to walk down the hallway due to the horrendous smell. They need to take it out more often. The grills are nice! Towels are easy to access and return. The general store is helpful if you’re in a pinch They have markets that come and line up by the walkway which are fun! Our couch was covered in green slime…. Silly...
Read moreParking folks appeared to not want to be helpful. Looked like they just wanted to leave work and go home. Front desk and concierge people weren't nice and seemed annoyed when answering my questions.
Room was barely clean. The place was so old. TV didn't even have cable. It was antenna. No daily cleaning service - this was not in the hotel description when booking through Costco. Also had cockroaches towards end of my stay. So much more terrible things with this hotel. Also, laundry equipment was dirty and old. I didn't even want to make coffee in their coffee maker. This hotel needs a huge renovation.
At least the parking guy that brought up my bags was nice. He's a young guy from Big Island.
Can't really remember the phone service here, but overall, I felt like I was annoying people when I called.
The Whaler store store was probably the best thing about the hotel, which is sad and says a lot. At least this store had beer to make my stay at such an old hotel feel a bit better.
Terrible terrible service. The lady that served us was so aloof and oblivious to our needs. My young toddler had just hit his head on the pavement on the beach and was bleeding before we got to the restaurant and the waitress seemed to not be sympathetic the fact that this happened or that we needed our food ASAP so that we could go to urgent care. That's another thing, the food took FOREVER - at least over 30-45 minutes. If I could remember the name of the waitress, I would list it here so that she could get fired.
At Aina Gourmet Market, I ordered smoothies and took awhile to get. At least staff was nice.
Pools probably the best thing about Honua Kai
I had to leave the hotel for the early morning flight that I had so I basically checked out myself. It took forever for someone to come from the main building to get my car so I basically was almost late for my flight. When the guy showed up with my car, he tossed me my keys and didn't even offer to help me with my staff. Terrible experience, trying to check myself out. I've never had this experience. I expected someone to be available at my building, even at an early time, to help me load my car for a smooth exit. Additionally, one time, I left some stuff in my car that was valeted to the garage. The parking guy didn't want to go bring my car from the garage so he gave me my guys and told me to get get my stuff instead. I circled the garage what must have been 4 times until I found my car. He didn't even give me proper instructions. Was very frustrated. I would list the guy's name if I could remember so what he could get fired or at least have a severe warning. I feel like the staff here don't care because they know all the other staff people don't care. My experience at the Outrigger Reef in Waikiki was so much different. At the Outrigger Reef, staff was nice and there to serve you.
Call out to the short Asian guy that helped me bring my stuff to my room. He's from the Big Island.
Front desk was rude and was annoyed that I was even asking any questions. Concierge was rude too.
Dirty and old room that needs serious renovations. Had cockroaches towards end of stay. Left additional comments above.
Room was not properly described on Costco online reservation that hotel would not include daily room cleaning service.
Would need serious discounts or credit to consider coming back here. Such a...
