Our experience at Honua Kai in unit HKK-236 was just okay. I've stayed at much nicer properties on Maui, and I would consider staying elsewhere if you are thinking about renting this property. Check in was easy, the Bell Staff were fantastic! When we first walked in to our unit, we were immediately hit with the musty smell of mold and/or mildew. I reported this to the KBM guest services office. They sent someone to the room to change the filter in the air conditioning and supposedly clean the unit. I did not see them do this as we weren't in the room when it happened. Two days later I notified them of the continued smell and they offered an air purifier. At this point I began to look for reviews of this place to see if there had been other concerns about the mold/mildew smell and low and behold, I found some. Other guests have reported the same concerns, but the guest services employee stated that they knew nothing of other complaints. These guests were offered the same solutions as we were. They are aware of this problem and it has not been resolved. There was visible mold in the shower. The screen doors for the patio were broken and unusable. There were Tommy Bahama Beach Chairs and Umbrellas in the closet. We tried both of the umbrellas, but both were broken and not able to be used. When I notified guest services, I was told a new one would be sent over, but it never was during the remainder of our stay. This building has a garbage chute in a closet in the hallway. Every time we walked past the closet, it smelled like walking past the garbage dump. Truly, it was gross. Surely something can be done about this. There was a fan drying something out in the hall during our entire stay. The landscaping is lovely and well manicured. The pool areas were nice as well. The issue with the pool areas were that people would hold chairs at the pool all day, yet hardly use them. We did see security come around several times to address this, but never saw any belongings removed. Needless to say, it was difficult to get a spot at the pool. The highlight of this property is that it has Dukes Beach House Restaurant on site. Great atmosphere and food just steps from your door. My advice is that you can find nicer properties on Maui, so keep looking! Dates Stayed: July 3-8, 20025

Good location! Pretty property. Horrible staff. Check in procedure off to a rough start. The guy said hi, asked if i was checking in, and he told me where to park. Didnt explain ANYTHING about the property. That was it, then he went back talking with his co-worker. All the chairs by the pool are "reserved" before 8:30 everyday by other guests. I asked Noah at the activity hut how to get a chair, he said I should remove the towels or other personal items from the chairs if the were not being used. However I didn't feel comfortable doing that. So just observing the situation, usually about 20% of the chairs are occupied, but all of them are being "reserved" all the time. During our 7 day stay, down by the pool wait staff had never once approached me or my family offering drinks or snacks. I did however see waiters take orders from a couple different people by the pool. They are way understaffed. The gift shop wasn't much better. I went down to grab a soda, and upon check out, there was a person in front of me waiting to pay for her items.... her and I stood waiting FOREVER while the 2 workers were dinking around with a variety of machines.....ignoring us. They seemed annoyed that we were there. Maybe they were "closing"? It was 3:30pm. Back in our room, we liked our room, but there were issues. On the deck there are some lounge chairs that were so filthy and gross that nobody wanted to sit on them without a towel. Also the door to our deck would not stay closed, so a bird got in a couple times and pooped all over. And finally the checkout procedure. Check out is 10:00 a.m. at 10:02 the cleaning staff knocked on our door and was rude to my wife, Yelling that "Checkout time is 10am!" I took a look at my watch and it was 10:06 when we left the room. So yeah we were a couple minutes late, but the situation could have been handled better. We usually stay in nice places that are well run, and was hoping this would be a winner. It isnt.

Been coming to Maui for quite a while. First stop 1983! Been up and down the island many times either on assignment vacationing weddings have lots of Ohana there now adopted godmother and the best childhood friend Local boy best friend ever :) thanks to an amazing generous invitation from a mainland, Ohana family we were convinced to stay where they keep a second home at Honua Kai Resort. which apparently has been a well kept secret for quite some time! I have never in my life had such a great experience as I did here. Amazing facility great Jim wonderful pools, local store, Spa what else could you ask for? How about World famous Duke’s restaurant right on the property and yes, we had the hula pie. The attention to detail the continued support of the service staff the neatness and cleanliness of all facilities. The management company staff were available 24 seven very responsive amazing how well they took care of this anything you need it was there and if it wasn’t, they get it for you if you just wanna go to Maui relax and have everything nearby including a wonderful beach weather village shopping center great restaurants, golf course minutes away one call to these folks and all of that is right in front of youBeen to Maui many times and I gotta tell you, our family friends, Al and Kathey have it right. It’s an amazing experience. Stayed there six days they even throw in a car I mean come on.:)

Still staying on property during our stay now. All of my feedback is related to Outrigger and NOT the resort in whole...Don't bother with an ocean view, we have a large building directly blocking our view out the lanai and I was told the partial ocean view is only a few doors down, so not point in paying extra. Could have gotten a 2 bed partial ocean view for the same price as a 1 bed ocean view. Front desk staff was friendly at first with issues but became very rude when issues persisted. I believe they said the phrase, "not much they could do with our kind of booking." When fridge doesn't work and food was going bad inside because it wasn't cold enough they wanted us to move rooms at 8:30 at night because they didn't want to pay for food going bad. Was blamed for not calling them about it as soon as we checked in when we didn't know that the fridge wasn't cold enough to keep food from going bad within the first afternoon of checking in. Apparently they look their nose down on you based upon how you book your reservation if it's not directly with them. Fridge is not working properly, sort of cold but not cold enough for the milk in the door to not get chunky but apparently that's cold enough in their opinion. Maintenance guys tried to work on it twice but didn't seem to help.

Room was dirty when we got it. Fridge had dirt in all of the shelves and hairs. Dirty enough that I wiped the whole fridge out before putting food in. Pieces of dirt or something through the living and bedroom and bathroom floor. Many dishes inside the cupboards were dirty and had black stuff or hair on them. Reservation includes a hefty cleaning fee so I'd expect a little better cleanliness since they don't clean your room during your stay at all.

Nice resort overall and would stay here again but definitely not booking with Outrigger. Pools are great and grounds are well kept. Room is nice size but from what I was told Outrigger has a small 20% portion of the rooms in the resort and really doesn't seem to care about things working during your stay. Some of the their front desk staff was quite rude and just wants to blame you for issues with their rooms. Stay here but book...

I booked one of the Villa's for a week and was very underwhelmed with the service from the front desk. Not only was there a laundry list of to do's and how too's. The check in felt very unwelcoming and forced. When I asked a question which had them repeating a section of the original how too's showed that the staff was never deviate from a script.

The Villa was equipped with a kitchen but the maintenance was less than desirable. Stains on the couch which seems to be spot treated were still wet and the couch was unusable until they fully dried. The "stocked" kitchen had 2 pots and a small frying pan. No other items in the kitchen would work with the induction stove. When I called and asked for a kettle that would work the front desk said they couldn't help me. I also requested to have a light that was left on in a locked closet (apparently this is the owners area) to be shut off this was also an issue and needed a manager. I asked the front desk staff to have the manager call me when they were available. It took me arguing with the manager about the supplies in the kitchen to even get them to look for a kettle to at least boil water for tea and a long planned event to come have someone shut the light off.

At checking in I was also told there are machines with public towels for the resort but we were not allowed to use these. I was told that we would have to call in and have towels brought to our Villa for use in the pool areas. If this is the case shouldn't towels already be provided in the suite for the persons staying. I mean really, this is a resort with multiple pool areas.

I have also not mentioned all the cockroaches through out the suite, the fight I had to have to get the dishwasher to work every time it was set to run or the black (I am guessing mold) in the grout on the showers which I got my own cleaning supplies and dealt with. Nor were there any tools for the bbq to be cleaned with. The coffee pot supplied for the villa was old and the element was so built up with crud it barely kept the...
