Great views, but deteriorating facility. When we arrived to find the office closed and no way to enter our condo (the access code had never been sent to us) I knew that everything wasn't going to be great here. But I never expected things to be so bad that I would wind up in urgent care with a puncture wound that might require stitches. (Spoiler alert: I did.) I'm sure the Maui Kai was one a first rate place. But those days are long gone. Access to the beach/water is boarded up with old pieces of plywood. Of the three units we rented, only one had a balcony. One had been modified to include the balcony in the room, another had the balcony enclosed in glass that had only a small window that opened. The rooms were small studios, some better decorated than others - but none updated since the 1980's. The one unit that still had a balcony had seriously corroded sliding glass doors that were too difficult for most of our group to open or close. Worse, the handles were corroded to the point the the edges were quite sharp. In fact, sharp enough to slice my hand open and send me to urgent care. The doctor there said I should probably have it stitched up, but that I might be able to simply keep it tightly bandaged for the following week. Opting not to spend any more of my vacation in waiting for medical care than necessary I chose no stitches. Perhaps my scar would have been smaller with sutures - who knows? Of course I contacted the management about the (now) obviously dangerous door handles, but in spite of repeated emails back and forth they have declined to take ANY action to make them safer. 15 minutes with a file would probably do the trick. They did say that they had lubricated the offending glass door so that it would be easier to open. Nice! But I pity the next person who slices their hand open. I sincerely hope it's not a child. Anyway, the pool is small, with a view of the parking lot. The beds are not the best: Murphy beds that fold up into the wall (the rooms are small). I should say on the management's behalf, that they did offer to pay the medical bill for my injury. However losing the day at the urgent care (starting with seeing my hand covered in blood and a red gaping wound between my thumb and forefinger) and not being able to snorkel or swim for five days of vacation, didn't make the offer seem too great. if you stay here, watch out. Bring some duct tape to protect your fingers. Great views, great location, but not...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed at Maui Kai Condos (#803) for 3 nights in May 2018. Here are some things we liked about the place: The staff were courteous and helpful. In particular, I want to recognize Richard, the maintenance guy, who helped recover my wife's earring from the bathroom sink where she had inadvertently dropped it. Although they do not have a 24X7 frontdesk, they made arrangements for us to pick up the keys for our room on our first night in a manner which felt solid. (This is something for patrons to keep in mind - the frontdesk closes at 7 p.m. and so you want to call them and figure out how to get into your rooms). The views from the room are great. You can wake up from your bed looking at the vast expanse of the Pacific.
Here are some things we didn't care for very much and why I would be disinclined to going with Maui Kai again: The experience of staying here comes close to living in somebody else's house - without them in the house, of course. The reason it feels that way is because the place is stocked with (worn-down) kitchen utensils, cutlery, beach reads, sunscreen, and all of the paraphernalia that you might expect to see at someone's beach house. That is what makes staying in these condos different from the experience of staying in a typical hotel room. While all that sounds fine, the style and decor of the rooms is beyond outdated - they reminded my wife and me of the 1970s and was far too outdated for our tastes. We also found the bed to be not particularly comfortable and as a result did not catch a great sleep during our stay here. Guests who regularly stay at say, a Westin or a Marriott, would be very disappointed with the beds here - unless it is the case that different units have beds of differing qualities and we simply landed up at a unit that had not been updated in ages.
Lastly, this is speculative and I am very hesitant to blame it on Maui Kai condos but I would note that both my wife and I had quite a bit of skin irritation after we got back home to Philadelphia from Maui. My wife in fact had to see a doctor and the doctor said that my wife's skin rashes may have resulted from a hot tub infection and indeed, we did take dips in the hot tub here. I bring it up in my review so that a) guests can be cautious in using the hot tub and b) in the event that management reads these reviews, they should make sure that sanitary conditions are being maintained in the pool and in...
Read moreLet me preface this by saying two things: we stayed in Unit 208, which wasn’t privately managed, like a lot of the other reviews were seeing, and we booked pretty last minute (a week before) through the Hawaiian Airlines travel package website. While we did get a bonus private patio in addition to our lanai (it’s a corner unit), there were almost no other positives of the entire unit. The building was apparently built in the 70s and everything about the apartment, including the furniture, appliances, and overall vibe of the place completely reinforced that fact. The unit is DESPERATELY in need for some upgrades, and for the holiday price we paid of 800ish dollars a night, there’s no way the owners can’t afford it. However, we saw some of the privately managed units and they were beautifully upgraded, so you might have better luck choosing one of those (like room 203). Other than the unit, the service was pretty confusing: we weren’t told where to call when we needed towels, and we weren’t even provided housekeeping (you only get housekeeping if you’re staying OVER 8 days). The views were beautiful, the pool was nice, and the location was super convenient with a food truck park right next to us, shaved ice, a lot of the nicer resorts and their restaurants and spas literally right next to us, and beach on both sides of the building. This is not our first time in Hawaii, or Maui even: we’d previously stayed at the Aqua-Aston Kaanapali Villas and they were super worth it; we totally recommend that property. All in all, not worth it for...
