Three of us stayed in a double room on the second floor on the first week of December 2023 - from Tuesday through Sunday. I had other family members in the double room on the third floor directly above us. We were in town for a family wedding.
Positives: The location! It’s directly across from McCarren Park. You are about a half mile walk to the G line Nassau Ave station. There are so many amazing restaurants and bars within walking distance (we kept about a .75 mile area from CODA. We had brunch at a different place every day. And each place was really good! The front desk staff, Bohemia restaurant staff, and hospitality staff were all so helpful and nice. Good vibe and great aesthetic. The food at Bohemia was wonderful. We had breakfast on Friday. The rain showerhead in the shower is amazing. I love the fragrance in the toiletries provided. Reminded me of Hawaii, oddly enough. I love that it wasn’t a bunch of mini bottles and that they had large permanent full size affixed. Less plastic waste.
Negatives: A lot of fees on top of the nightly stay. They were not a surprise, but you have to read all the fine print and understand what you’re getting into when you book. Just remember that when price shopping. I would still choose to stay here again if the price and location and everything is right when price shopping. The daily room cleanings were completely random on what time of day they would happen, if they happened at all. But, if you ran into one of the hospitality people and asked for some thing, they were very happy to help immediately. It was always easy to get some thing in a reasonable timeframe if you needed it.
There is a night club that runs in Bohemia on Friday nights and Saturday nights. I don’t think it shuts down until 2 AM or after. You can definitely hear it in your room. I don’t mind sleeping with sounds. That’s New York. But if you have an issue with that, I would recommend earplugs.
Room quirks: Whoever constructed that shower doesn’t understand how water drainage works. You shouldn’t have the floor sloping away from the drain. We did not have any flooding issues, but there was water outside of the shower several times. The closet is super weird. There’s a slot for an ironing board but there’s nothing in it. But an iron is provided. If you request an ironing board, they do not bring you an ironing board, but will bring you a steamer. There’s a lot of wasted space in that closet. The pole comes straight out at you, as opposed to going across from wall to wall. So you lose use of half of the closet already. Just very weird. Our bathroom door would not close tight unless you lifted it up while you were pulling it closed. Our main room door you had to make sure to pull closed when you left or push closed when you arrived because it never closed and locked on its own. It was always left open if you did not push...
Read moreI could not recommend this hotel any less. I'm sorry to write this review, but I had such a negative experience at the Coda Williamsburg, I feel an obligation to warn folks to stay away if you need a place to sleep in the area. If you are expecting a relatively updated, clean room where you can actually get some sleep for the price - stay away. I'd say to book anywhere else.
From the beginning, I should have known this would be a negative experience. Upon booking, the hotel never sent me any confirmation of my reservation, so when I contacted them to request an email, they sent me a message saying "Room Type: You've reached the top + it’s a proper penthouse. 1500 sq ft." Once we arrived to the hotel, we were given keys to the opposite of that listed "room type" - it was a closet of a room on the second floor, maybe 250 sq feet? And on the second floor, closest to the entrance to the club.. The loudest potential spot in the house. We went back down to the desk to kindly ask if this was correct, and were greeted with confused, incredulous expressions. The consierge (and all staff we engaged with) was nice, but the song and dance of "well there must have been a mistake, the penthouse is occupied" and finally "our email confirmations are generic, there's only two of them - one for regular rooms, one for the penthouse - they must have just sent you the wrong one" left a lot to be desired.
The consierge brought a bottle of cheap wine to our room as a consolation for this, with dishwater-speckled glasses. After rinsing those out in the bathroom, in the sink that didn't work properly - it sputtered as you turned it on, only to then shoot out a stream so powerful it sprayed back up at you - we noticed the complimentary bottles of water in our room.. one was already drank from. Threw that out immediately.
We stayed this past Thursday and the club downstairs was extremely loud until 3 AM, with loud people milling about until seemingly dawn. There was no information about this in the confirmation or, where it should be, on the booking page - and it wasn't even clear through the club's website. The fact that we were on the 2nd floor made this entirely unbearable. To add insult to injury.. the television didn't work at all, so we weren't able to drown out the sound with anything. We didn't sleep at all overnight, then once the sun came up, the park across the street was full of loud pickleball players at the crack of dawn.
Our trip was both vacation and business, with meetings planned on Friday - we were absolutely exhausted and had to cut our trip short. Stay away if you need to sleep. The only even remotely positive feature is that it's centrally located to where I needed to be. Other than that, save your money, it's not worth anywhere near the exorbitant price for what...
Read moreMy husband and I had a wonderful stay this past week at Coda.
First, the five stars for hospitality and service were well earned. Housekeeping, the night desk and the lovely ladies working the bar/temporary breakfast area at the pool on the Saturday of our stay were outstanding and went above and beyond. We attribute that to the Director of Rooms, Alberto Hinojosa. He was diplomatic, accommodating and very helpful with a couple of very minor glitches that could have left a bitter taste if not for his deft handling. He is an asset to the property.
Second, my lower grade for our room is not because there was anything inherently wrong with it, but I believe as older travelers, they weren’t outfitted well for US.
While our bed was incredibly comfortable and the linens were very soft. Unfortunately, the bed was that very low style that is hard as heck to get our aging bodies up and down the multiple times we needed to while organizing to go out.
Which, leads me to why someone was getting up and down so much. There was only one chair and it was at the desk. Because this is Brooklyn, our King room was TINY. It was impossible to get past the desk while moving around the room if someone was using it. Often, I had to walk across the bed while my husband used the desk. We also couldn’t eat in the room due to one chair. Oddly, there was a large very heavy floor decoration of a non functional pitcher, that would have been a great place for a small chair.
The bathroom had a wonderful zero barrier shower. Pressure was great and hot water was plentiful regardless of time of day. My husband tells me the supplied shampoo, body wash and lotion were effective and smelled great.
However, it had what was basically a pedestal sink! There was absolutely no convenient way to assemble product or make up, UNTIL, I convinced a maintenance man to find me a rolling cart like he used for delivering items to rooms. I was thrilled to have that cart for the length of our stay. It was AWESOME and convenient for ice bucket placement too, because those buckets sweated condensation profusely.
Last but not least, we chose this hotel because it does not have a “rooftop” for parties and thus, was quiet and restful at night. We also didn’t have to fight for elevators with revelers.
We highly recommend Room 212 which faced the pool and was located far from the elevator. We do not hold the size of a NYC hotel room against Coda, nor that the usual neighborhood travelers are MUCH younger than we are. We are much more worried about the condition of our hips than being hip. When visiting our son, we will definitely choose Coda again.
FYI, this hotel was a short walk to both the subway and the ferry to Manhattan and...
