Renovation in 2013 leaves this place in a good state.
Unfortunately I visited during renovation in June 2013. Location: This is my 4th visit to New York. Generally I prefer a location in midtown above 42nd street. The Morgans hotel however is located between 38th and 37th, so for me the location wasn’t ideal on paper. In practice though, it was a short walk from Grand Central station. Not ideal – but not terrible.
Renovation note: My stay was in early June in the middle of renovations.
Staff: In light of renovations, the staff should have found the working conditions difficult. I would be stressed if I were working in the same conditions. However, the staff were extremely professional and helpful. This was also true of their sister hotel in the Morgan’s chain – the Mondrian South Beach. With these two experiences, I will be certain to choose more Morgans chains from now on.
Rooms: The hotel is very old and cramped (not too uncommon for New York). We were upgraded to a larger room on the floor being renovated for our first night. The staff were very quick to apologise for the location, and ensured were were upgraded to a higher floor suite for the following two nights as a form of apology for putting us our. The suite rooms are superb. They have a separate bedroom, living room and bathroom. A lot of space for unpacking. It’s worth the extra. There are only two suites per floor, with one facing the street and one facing the rear (no view). Avoid the 4th floor rear suite at all costs (the room we had the first night). I heard from one staff member that it’s referred to as the bat cave. Although it might be one way of getting a suite for the cost of a normal room. It’s a great room, but even if it’s bright outside you could mistaken it for being the middle of the night.
Would I stay again: I’d like to review comments post renovation. If I could avoid the “bat cave” room, I’d possibly stay again. Although price depending, I would probably choose a hotel further north.
Other notes: I must give many thanks to the staff in this wonderful hotel. They really went above and beyond which in light of renovation is an amazing feat. Other hotels should take note and follow the lead shown by...

I booked this hotel on the hotel tonight app hours before my arrival. When I arrived the front desk had no clue about my booking. They just kept saying "it's not in our system yet". They did have my confirmation number so they must have gotten an email from the app notifying them that I booked the room. The issue was their own management system. They tried to blame it on hotel tonight, saying "it's because you just booked it". That's false, I use the app all the time and the check in process instantaneous even when booked mins before arrival. The main problem here is how they handled it. I showed up to the hotel and paid before I got there, I don't want to hear anything that's not "here's your room key". After they had proof that I paid they should have given me access to my room and figured out there problem on their time not mine.
Strike 2 was when they tried to do an authorization on my card for $100 for the mini bar. This was not disclosed at time of booking. And one employee said $100 the other said its supposed to be $200. Seems to me like it's at their discretion. I told them I'm not using their overpriced minibar and had to argue for 10 mins not to let them run my card. After I adamantly refused to pay the $100 they told me to let them hold my Drivers license (to prevent me from trying to take something with out paying)
The staff here treated me like a criminal. They wouldn't give me access to my room even after it was evident that I paid for it and they tried to force me to allow them to hold $100 of my money when this was not disclosed at booking. The check in confusion should have never happened. Hotel Tonight provided them with the information immediately, they dropped the ball from there. I had to fight to get what I paid for and was embarrassed in front of who I came there with. That type of experience is and automatic 1...
Read moreClassy, laidback hotel with a really friendly staff. We booked a group block here for our wedding and ended up receiving a complimentary upgrade to a suite from them. We loved our room and heard nothing but good things about the hotel from our guests.
The staff was a lovely mixture of competence and friendliness. I got the impression that the staff as a whole got along well with one another, which gave the whole place a really pleasant vibe.
I also highly recommend their bar/lounge, especially if you enjoy cocktails in an easygoing setting. It's a large space with lots of comfy couches and a bar well stocked with a huge variety of whiskies and bourbons that specializes in making old fashioned. I had an old fashioned with bourbon, scottish spiced sweetener, and burlesque bitters and it was great! The bar is only open on...
