Our experience at Fine and Rare was very disappointing. I made a reservation for my guest’s 60th birthday celebration over two months in advance letting the restaurant know that it would be a birthday celebration and that I would like banquette or booth seating. A couple of weeks later, I received a call telling me that they would not be able to honor my reservation because there was a private event booked for that night. I rebooked for the following evening. Several days prior to my reservation date I called to ask for a credit card authorization form to pay for the dinner so that my guest would not get the bill at the table at dinner. I was told to call back after 5pm when the manager would be in. I had to insist that my email address be forwarded to the manager to simply send me the form as I would not be available after 5pm to call again. After 5 attempts at giving the phone operator my email address, she finally got it right. I returned the signed form giving only the last 4 digits of my credit card and the expiration date and saying that I would call with the missing information since I don’t like to send sensitive information via email. I spoke to the manager, Ashley, via telephone a couple of nights later giving her the credit card information and confirming that we would be seated in a booth. I had also requested that a candle be brought out with our dessert and she said that for birthdays, the restaurant brings out a mini cupcake with a candle with dessert. On the evening of the reservation we were seated at a table. I told the maitre’d that Ashley assured me that we would be seated at a booth. He checked with her and the only way that we could be accommodated would be to rush through dinner since they had another reservation booked for the booth. I passed on it and stuck with the table seating. We ordered dessert after the meal and I waited and wondered if the waiter would ever come with the birthday cupcake. About 5-10 minutes after we finished eating dessert he finally showed up with the cupcake and hastily presented it as an afterthought. I waited and waited for him to come back to let me know that the bill was taken care of but he never did. On my way back from the restroom, I asked about our bill and Ashley began going through the process of giving me the bill and asking to charge my card. I asked her why we had to go through this since I had prearranged payment. She apologized and said that she would take care of it and that we were good to go. On our way out she caught me and said that my card would not go through because it was missing a couple of numbers but she said that she would call me the next day to straighten it out. As we we walked out to meet our Uber, a man chased after us and rudely and aggressively said that we hadn’t paid our bill. I relayed to him what Ashley said to me and he was clear that this was unacceptable and that he had to “batch out” that evening. I went back inside to pay with my credit card and to top it all off, they handed me a pen that didn’t work. Further, I received an email from OpenTable confirming my check-in at 6:32 and then received another one at 9:11pm saying that the restaurant had canceled my reservation. I speculate that F&R didn’t want me to write this review. I called OpenTable to reinstate my reservation. I can only imagine how many reservations they have canceled in order to avoid bad reviews. I cannot in good faith recommend this establishment to anyone. We ordered two cocktails which were pretty good, but the appetizers were mediocre at best. The entrees were fine, not especially good or great. Regardless, the lack of professionalism, unkept promises, and the poor service were what made this experience the most unpleasant, especially for a once in a lifetime birthday celebration. REVIEW UPDATE MARCH** 30 2023
I went lastnite hoping for the same experience I had when I first visited this place ,My “Hostess “ was super nice ,helpful, educated and kind ,we had reservations at the bar because everything was booked we arrived 30 minutes earlier our “Reservation” was for (8 :00 PM )and he was kind enough to sit us on the “Left Entrance Booth” and told us that there was a chance we would need to share the table we were fine with it .
My “waiter”arrived promptly also very nice professional, educated ,handsome ,blond ,tall he delivers the service as he should and we were expecting although “The Dressing” was not never sent for my salad , he kindly gave me options for it brought it ,just to let you know the “Cup”for my dressing was chipped on the side! (That’s an issue for health and sanitation) and checked if we neither further assistance we tried to change tables because we wanted to see the “Stage” but then decided to stay in the same spot we then orderer another bottle of wine ! I noticed there was this man with a “Blazer And Tie” (Blue Stripes And Yellow strips)I believe he was a “Manager or Supervisor “ looking at us sitting at our table in a very “NASTY WAY” and going around and looking again ,again ,again ! We had our table with food still ,we then ordered a “Cheese Board” because my partner didn’t want to keep eating his “Raviolis” and like I mention another bottle of “Wine” I keep seeing this man coming again again harassing me ,my partner and my table with his “NASTY LOOK”and going over to my “Waitress” and asking him about my table ! There was nobody waiting the place was pretty much already with availability due to the fact the brought a band that was playing “Blues” country and some other stuff ! Which is not really why I went there I went there for the “Jazz” and people were just leaving because they didn’t like the music at all!there was a couple (Caucasians Females) next to us when we got there they were having dinner ,they didn’t have any bottle of wine just a glass who pretty much was empty from the entire time till I left ! We arrived at (7:30 PM and Left at 10:30 PM)nobody was asking them anything or offering anything else besides “Tap Water” of course I’m (LATIN And MY PARTNER IS KOREAN) what a coincidence!
I was there and he never looked at them the way he was looking at us! He never asked them or anybody about them! The problem was with us ! I felt so bad and harass that I didn’t finish my wine and we decided to leave.
When we come outside I sit at the couch and my partner is trying to take a picture of me in the “Couch” the same guy once again starts looking at me with this “NASTY LOOK” he goes and talks to the “Hostess” ,I felt so uncomfortable that I decided to stop and just leave I was aggravated! The “Hostess” asks about our night and I tell him what happened with the guy he was actually talking to he says : “ Oh Honey do not let anyone ruin your night” I told him nobody would but he did enough for me to feel uncomfortable to the point that we decided to leave ! The “Hostess” was rushing me “Good Night” and I soon as I go out I see the guy coming back at him and whispering what just happened , I had no idea this place would be hiring a (SUPERVISOR/MANAGER) who is a “RACIST” but thanks now I know and everyone else will too!.
I also added my “Super Happy Pictures” while having a...
Read moreI rarely leave reviews but wanted to because the service really stuck with me, and not in a good way.
Went last night to celebrate something with a friend, and we were prepared to spend whatever and it was really a rare night out for us, and it was restaurant week, which we didn't know about beforehand so were pleasantly surprised. The initial vibe was good and I really liked the aesthetic. The food was alright - nothing amazing but decent, but the service was just bad. Right away, our waiter was off-putting and made me uncomfortable. He didn't listen to anything we said, inserted himself where unneeded, and disappeared when we actually needed him.
When I ordered off the prix fix menu (restaurant week), I ordered the pasta BY NAME off the menu (I think I ordered the spinach pasta, as listed), and he corrected me on the name. This would have been fine but I didn't misspeak - I ordered the only pasta off the menu by the name of the pasta listed on the menu. The correction from his end was not only unnecessary but incorrect and only served to make me feel small. He also would clearly listen to our conversation (our table was next to the POS station) and chime in when we were not talking to him in any way.
We wanted to keep a cocktail menu as we planned to order a few, so he took one and I tucked the other one away next to me. Halfway through the meal he noticed it was there and instead of asking if he could take it or doing it with any tact, he slid his hand in between the tableware to extract it, leaving us without a cocktail/wine menu when we'd explicitly told him we were going to order more. He did ask to remove my friend's food menu that was left behind and when she said yes, instead of walking the 3 steps over to her right, he reached across her chest to grab the menu from the other side of her arm... just one serving faux pas after another. For the amount of money we were spending and the "fine dining" vibe of this place, I really expected better.
He then disappeared for almost our entire main dish, leaving us without drinks (we wanted to order more) and a menu to browse. We found the drink menu online but he didn't come back for quite a while - in fact, we were done with dessert before I was able to order my second drink.
Lastly, when the time for the check came, we split the bill and my friend planned to leave the tip since her dinner/drinks were more expensive and we'd already decided on that arrangement. When paying, we were reiterating the plan for each other and he jumped in to instruct us how much to tip him, not understanding what we were doing, but also... please don't tell me what to tip. It's unprofessional and entitled, especially when your service was SO sub-par and only served to make me feel dumb.
I'm a 39 year old woman (and my friend is around that) who also works in the service industry, and he spoke to me like I was a dumb teenager. I was dressed nicely, put together, and gave him no reason to try to make me feel small... and yet he did (or tried). It only served to irritate us, and while I can't speak for my friend, I have no interest in going back. There are plenty of amazing restaurants in NYC, and when I'm dropping $300.00 on dinner, I expect better.
Again, food, ambiance was good (the food really felt mediocre for the prices even though it was fine), but the service was enough to put me off. Also the $20 cocktails were nothing incredibly special -...
