La Quinta, Phoenix-Chandler
This hotel was recently renovated (in 2017, I believe). The lobby is spacious and inviting. My room was large and clean. Carpets, furniture, walls, and floors all in excellent, like-new condition. The bathroom was clean and size was adequate. The lighting in the bedroom was excellent; in the bathroom the lighting was okay but I would have liked brighter lights over or along side of the mirror for grooming purposes.
The included ("free") breakfast was good. (I stayed in five hotels on this trip: La Quinta, Holiday Inn Express, Drury Inns, and Best Western (two locations). The breakfast offerings were roughly comparable in all these locations, but La Quinta was slightly below the others in extent and variety of available food.)
I give this La Quinta location a qualified recommendation, four on a five-point scale. Here's why I do not give an unqualified, 5-star recommendation (listed in order of most important (to me) to least important):
The bathtub drained slowly so that by the time I finished my shower I was standing in a puddle of water. When the tub drained a few minutes later, an unappealing layer of soap scum was left behind.
When I reached my room there was a dog barking loudly and repetitively in a nearby room. The noise was loudest in the hallway but also audible inside my room with the door closed. I called and notified the hotel desk and, to their credit, the barking stopped and I did not hear it again during my stay.
There was "air freshener" odor in the bathroom when I arrived. I quote air freshener because I believe that if I can smell air freshener, the air is not really fresh. The air freshener scent itself is unpleasant and perhaps it is masking other, more repellant, odors.
There was no place to hang a wet towel or washcloth to dry between uses, and also there was no place to hang a towel (used or unused) near the tub/shower. There was only one 24" towel bar for the entire bathroom, and it was occupied with clean towels and washcloths. These days most hotels invite me to reuse my towels (and sheets), all for the sake of the environment, don't you know (of course the laundry expense saved by the hotel is not their motivation). I'm happy to use my towels more that once but I need a place to hang them to dry between uses.
The bottom of the bathtub curved gradually up into the sides leaving a very narrow flat space at the bottom. While showering I found my feet at an awkward angle on the curved part of the tub.
The only fresh fruit available at the breakfast were apples and two sad-looking oranges. There were no bananas. Perhaps this was an anomaly peculiar to the morning I spent there. The only toppings provided for oatmeal or dry cereal were brown sugar and raisins. Here's what I would like with my breakfast cereal: fresh bananas and berries (straw, rasp, or blue) and walnut pieces. Raisins and dried cranberries are okay, too, if you need a sugar rush. While I'm at it, I'll say I'd also appreciate some high-fiber, low-sugar cereal. (No, oatmeal is not high-fiber; it has 2 grams of insoluble fiber in a 40 gram, 150 calorie serving.) I would recommend Post Shredded Wheat 'N Bran, spoon size, or Kashi Go-Lean, Original. Raisin Bran is okay for fiber but is too...
Read moreI checked in online prior to coming to the hotel. When I checked in person for my room key, I was given the 4th floor and was told that all the rooms were sold out on the lower floors, however, our volleyball coaches and team that booked their room that day I checked in, was fortunate to get a low floor room. What is the purpose of checking in online prior to coming to the hotel if I am not able to get a better room? This to me didn't make any sense. Either the hotel representative did this to me on purpose or rooms just so happen to be available on the same day.
Overall, very convenient location near the freeways, stores, restaurants and gas stations. Hotel room was very spacious and loved that they had a washer, elevator and free complimentary breakfast. The only issue was the two female employees that were quite rude on Wednesday morning when we entered the lobby area. We came down early because we had a volleyball tournament and they repeated out loud “breakfast starts at 7”, “breakfast starts at 7”. I was currently coping with some health issues that required a special diet, so I brought my own whole wheat bread and food for breakfast, as I would utilize the toaster. As I began to use the toaster, one of the employees walked pass me and repeated again and again-breakfast starts at 7. I explained that we weren’t waiting for breakfast, so stop.
It was pretty rude of them to repeat themselves to people entering the lobby that breakfast wasn’t ready until 7. It wasn't a welcoming "good morning"! I observed people walk in and walk out to go elsewhere to eat breakfast just because of the rudeness.
Given our tournaments that started at 0700/0800 every day, I would’ve given a better rating if breakfast started at 6, rather than 7, without the rude employees. Also didn’t give a better rating because we had to get new keys every day (wouldn't work), the dryer was not working and not blowing hot air causing us to drive out to a laundry mat at 9pm at night and the elevator on our end of the building (426) broke on the same day we arrived.
Everything else was excellent! Thank you so much for having us and we hope to see you...
Read moreThis is a decent hotel for the price, and is in a great location. This was my second time staying here, and will be my last. Honorable mention to Matthew at the front desk…he was so awesome! However, Serena that works at the front desk needs to attend a customer service class or training ASAP! Housekeeping left the prior guest’s trash in the refrigerator, so I put it in the trash can in our room. Upon leaving for the day, we stopped at the front desk and asked her if she could send someone in to take out the trash and give us some fresh towels. Didn’t want it to smell in our room from food being left out. I was polite and friendly when I approached her, with zero aggression. Her response to me was that because I was only staying 3 nights housekeeping isn’t provided, I would have to stay at least 4 nights. I tried explaining to her that there was old food left behind by housekeeping and all I needed was for the trash to be taken out, not full housekeeping service. She wasn’t comprehending what I was saying and proceeded to get a very nasty attitude. She asked if I wanted to speak to the housekeeping manager and I said yes. That person ended up being busy but Serena said she could send someone in. Why couldn’t you have just done that from the jump?! Especially for something that was missed by the hotel staff! This should have been an easy fix, but because Serena doesn’t know how to interact with customers, you’re now losing one. I did receive a text from I'm assuming the housekeeping manager acknowledging the issue. When we returned to the hotel and I spoke to her, she apologized for the situation but defended Serena by saying she didn’t understand my request. Then she should have asked for clarification instead of getting snarky with a paying customer. Do better so you don’t lose...
