I'm not one who usually travels specifically for sports, but I was looking for accommodation near the Moda Center in December to attend two Trail Blazers games. The Inn at Northrup Station drew me in because of its incredibly positive reviews on multiple platforms, free parking, totally funky lounge décor, and Slabtown location.
The inn did not disappoint! We appreciated the selection of coffee and tea in the room, the full kitchen (even though we ate dinner at restaurants every day), the little balcony attached to our rear-facing room with a small view of the area, and just the overall size of the living space. Breakfast, which was included in the reservation, had a good variety of items, and I loved that there was an espresso machine available for use at any time in the lobby.
Yes, we could hear the streetcar pass from inside our room, but I found that charming since Portland has some of the best public transit in the world. It was an authentic experience.
The staff was also warm, professional, helpful, and funky. They were able to advise us regarding transport, dinner, and keep the coffee pods flowing as needed. And let’s hear it for the team of housekeepers who work as a group to keep the rooms incredibly tidy.
We took public transportation during our stay – the free streetcar tickets given to us by the kind folks at the front desk, or Uber – and my rental car (a BMW SUV) sat in the hotel parking lot, gathering leaves and rain, for three days and there were no issues.
Admittedly, I was a bit wary about the safety of the parking lot after reading other reviews, but perhaps bad experiences came from people who left valuables visible in their vehicles. We cleared out our car entirely upon checking in.
If we return to Portland for more basketball games, or just to explore the city more, we’ll absolutely stay here again.
TIPS: -Sign up for the “Inn Crowd” loyalty program when you book your stay. When you check in, a wonderful little snack box will be waiting for you in the kitchen of your room!
-Visit Coffee Time in the neighborhood if you’d like to patronize a local café.
SHOUT-OUT: The palm trees outside of the inn! Such an unexpected and fun sight in the gloomy...
Read moreNo security in parking lots - Beware of car break-ins!
We have always stayed here whenever we are in Portland and our stay has always been pleasant. However on the early morning at about 6am on 20 May, 2021, our car got broken into. The whole back mirror on our car were broken and there were glass everywhere. We were parked on the first lot in the overflow parking lot and so it is actually very near to the hotel lobby. Another car was also broken into on the far end of the parking lot at the same time on the same day. Surveillance video showed it was done by 2 white males and they looked like professionals. It was shocking, we felt shaken and frustrated. They took 2 bags of new clothes and 1 bag of misc stuff with gifts for friends. We told the staff on duty that day what happen and he was emphatic and tried to be as helpful as he can since he was the only one at the front desk. From what we understand from him, this is something that happens quite often. And that is why there is a slip of paper upon check-in disclaiming that the hotel would not be responsible if the car is damaged or for any loss whilst parked in its premises. But i feel that this information should be disclosed to guests checking in so they would be made more aware of the risks.
We didn't bother making a police report because honestly what use can it be. We are just really glad no one was hurt. I am not sure if the management is aware of these thefts and break-ins, and if so, what and if anything can be done about it? I'm not sure if we'll be back to stay in this hotel wondering if my car would be broken into again. I seriously hope that the management can take some action and install more security measures to protect the safety of their guests as well as vehicles from damage or loss while staying within...
Read more3-night stay. Nice, spacious room. Clean. Kitchen was a great feature. I didn't take advantage of the stove like I was hoping, but it was nice to have. Full-size fridge was great for leftovers, half-gallon milk containers, water, sammiches, etc. Water pressure was very good. We take our showers in the evening, so we had plenty of hot water. Balcony was a plus. It was great to have 24 hour coffee machines at our disposal, but I personally didn't like the taste of coffee they offered. It's great that they're using a local brand, but it wasn't for me.
Floor shook at times, probably from the laundry facilities beneath us. Occasional noise from guests talking in the hallway. Can hear people walking around in the room above. Slept fine with brown noise playing during the night.
WiFi was not at all stable. In most areas of our room, the signal dropped across different devices. Mac, Android, and iOS suffered from poor WiFi signal. Front desk attendant offered to give us a different room on the first floor, but could not guarantee that the signal would be stronger. I checked to see if the WiFi would be any better in the hallway outside of the room that was offered to us, but it was about the same.
Breakfast was decent. Plenty of bread and bagels--some of which were GF. Fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese, hardboiled eggs, milk, cereal.
Parking lot was tight, but manageable. Didn't worry about our vehicle, as parking area lighting was adequate, not easily accessible to the outside, and was permit-only.
Room was very comfortable. Bed was great. My daughter slept on the sleeper sofa, and had no complaints.
Only real issue was the WiFi. It's not a deal-breaker, but should not be an issue at $254/night. Will probably stay here again...
