Having stayed at this property following a cruise 8 years ago, and having been quite happy with the hotel during that 3-night stay, we decided to reserve a night there again pre-cruise. Unfortunately, this experience was like night and day from the first. Upon checking in and arriving at our room, we quickly noticed the extremely worn furnishings, which included a heavily frayed sofa, torn drapery, dented refrigerator, crumpled lamp shade, heavily damaged bathroom vanity, numerous large gouges in the walls, black rubber skid marks on the ceiling, and a stained chair and ottoman (photos of all attached). I promptly called the front desk to inquire about moving to a new room, only to be told that all of the rooms would be in similar condition, and that the hotel was due for a "refresh". While certainly not pleased with that answer, we knew that for a single night's stay, it would hardly be worth trying to find accommodations elsewhere. Just a short time later, I suddenly heard my wife yell out in pain. I asked what was the matter, and she pointed to an exposed carpet tack that she had stepped on, wearing only socks on her feet. Quite frustrated at that point, we decided to get out of the room for the time being, and explore the area for the evening. After returning back to the hotel around 9:00 p.m., we purchased some frozen food items from the shoppette in the lobby, and headed back to the room. After taking the time to change out of street clothes, I popped the first item into the microwave in the kitchenette, only to soon find out that the microwave would not even do so much as warm a cup of water. The microwave would power on with an odd hum, but even after 3 minutes of watching the carousel go around, everything was still ice cold. Obviously frustrated yet again, I changed back into my regular clothes, and headed down to the lobby with my frozen food in-hand. I went to the front desk, reported this additional issue, and asked that I be contacted by a manager and/or compensated accordingly. A gentleman at the desk claimed that because I had prepaid for the room, nothing could be done with regard to any sort of partial refund, which of course sounded absurd. In the end, the best he would offer was 10,000 Hilton Honors points, which I explained would do me no good, as I don't stay often enough to use them. He still insisted that this was all that could be done, and that I could use the points to shop on Amazon after receiving them within a few days. I asked him what 10,000 Hilton Honors points would correlate to in dollars (I'm guessing a whopping $10), to which he had no idea; leaving me to heat our dinner with the microwave in the public breakfast area. Having returned from our cruise nearly two weeks later, you guessed it - not so much as a single Hilton Honors point added to my account, let alone the 10,000 as promised. Needless to say, we will no longer be staying at any Hilton properties, and will be sure to share this very unpleasant and unacceptable experience with family, friends, and other travelers.

Absolutely wonderful place to stay in San Diego! I cannot say enough good things about this hotel and I’m thrilled we found it for our first trip to SD. We definitely would stay here again if we come back to the area. We stayed four nights and it was incredibly comfortable. We had a two bedroom suite, with a spacious open living room and kitchenette area. This gave my family of four plenty of room to hang out and for kids to be kids when we had downtime. The beds and pillows were comfortable and the curtains darkened the room well. The staff was fantastic! Super friendly and helpful, always professional. Several people that we met in the hallways, from front desk to housekeeping, engaged us in conversation about our stay and seemed genuinely interested in what we said about the hotel. Location: easy to access the main sights in the area from here. We were short drives to the zoo, the beaches and downtown. Liberty Station is a short walk down the esplanade and has some great places to eat. The esplanade along the waterway was such a great place to hang out on and near the property. My family loved the free yard games, the equipment is available at the front desk, and the kids played hours of cornhole and basketball. These areas are open to the public and my kids met a local boy who was shooting hoops there the day we arrived. They met up several times over the course of our stay and even exchanged Snapchat names to stay in touch! Breakfast: a variety of options that included eggs, some sort of potatoes, meat, taco/burrito fixings, yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, cereal, bagels and waffles every day. It was very good for a free breakfast and the staff refilled the offerings quickly. On-site breakfast is a huge benefit when traveling with kids and I appreciated the variety that ensured everyone found something they liked. The Wednesday happy hour had a range of snacks (nuts, cheese, fruit, popcorn, veggies) along with wine and beer and was the perfect treat to start our four nights here. There’s a water refill station conveniently in the lobby and the water was cold and tasted great. I loved being able to refill our bottles on the way out for the day instead of buying water in single use bottles. I was a bit nervous that the noise from the airport would be disturbing but the hotel has done a great job to minimize it. We barely heard the planes when in our room. Construction was still going on in the south building where we stayed but the noise was minimal during the workweek. I was able to access the laundry room in the other building. The machines only take quarters ($2.25 per wash or dry) so bring small bills for the change machine and detergent if you want to run laundry.

*Note hotel is in active renovations and we stayed in room 156 South Building. Very pleased. Location:This was the perfect spot to enjoy the scenery of water, close to freeway, close to downtown, ten minute drive to Ocean (during good traffic times -we are early birds)and a variety of close food to walk to/quick two minute drive to Ralph's grocery. Ten minutes to Sea World. Cannot beat the closeness/free hotel shuttle to the airport and rental cars. Amenities: We have stayed in San Diego several times. Although we have loved the airbnb's and other hotels this one has really been our favorite. The front entrance was clean with friendly service and a hot breakfast with such a variety we were blown away every day. We really became quite spoiled with the fresh waffles, breakfast burritos, cereals oatmeal with a variety of toppings...... One of the best free breakfast we've ever had. The staff worked very hard to make this bountiful breakfast every morning. We could not believe the variety. It offers a laundromat as well as workout centers. Although the indoor workout center may not be huge it works and it's clean BUT, it's the outside that really offers such a focus for exercise and activity. There are different game areas as well as The beautiful walking path along the canal cannot be beat. The scenic view can also be seen from their very clean and well-kept outdoor swimming pool and amazingly heated hot tub. The free airport shuttle set my mind at ease with our very early flight we had to catch, it was on time and got us there with plenty of time to spare. Comfort and Staff: The van driver was very efficient and all about business. Loved this. All of the front desk staff as well as the environmental service staff were more than friendly and always went out of their way to answer questions and get us the services we needed. Our room was very clean and had more than enough comfortable items for our stay. The king size bed was very comfortable. I know other reviews stated the bed was not good, it actually is. My husband and I both struggle with a good night's rest related to arthritis and we slept so wonderfully on our bed. The television had a swivel on it so you could turn it towards the kitchen, the living room or the bedroom wherever you were relaxing at. A small but comfortable patio was available. I know others mentioned not liking the sound of the airplanes, we actually thought this added to the quaintness and scenic quality. We often sat outside and watch the planes take off while also watching people kayak up and down the canal add into the bay. (The plane noise never disturbed us in our room)You could also see boats coming and going in and out of the bay just to the right. The walking bridge and the model naval ship also added to unique scenic availability and other points of interest. Although there was so much to do away from the hotel, we often found that for a good vacation day all we had to do was just walk around the grounds. Oggie s along with the other restaurants all within a very very close walking distance were amazing. The staff at these restaurants definitely tuned in if you were a guest at the hotel. They made you feel like it was one big community. Another mention on one of the reviews regarding the parking. Yes , you do have to pay for a parking pass, but this is to help eliminate guests of the other point of interest activities surrounding the hotel taking up guest parking lot spot s. It wasn't a terrible price in the front desk was very sweet and honest and made sure that I didn't pay for one day or one moment longer. She noticed that our rental car had been turned in a day before our checkout and made sure that was noted on our account. Also they have the airport shuttle as well as the bus stop to downtown and other areas just a block from hotel. I cannot say enough good about this place if you're looking for a spot just to come for the weekend for relaxation and not have to leave the premises-or for a great spot to have...
