Sometimes when people use the word "charming" to describe a hotel or inn, they are merely sugar-coating the fact that the place is old and rundown. The Gables Inn gets a solid 5 stars for its location and views, but that's all it has going for it.
Staff is...odd. Not warm, friendly or inviting. The check-in process was goofy. The person who checked us in insisted on taking us up to our room, but she got a weird phone call about someone wanting her private info. Clearly sounded like a spam call or solicitor; not sure why she didn't just hang up or, at the very least, toss us the keycard so we could get settled. We had to wait at the top of the stairs for a bit before she came up let us in.
Upon entering our room, we encountered a horribly stained carpet. Blech. I can't understand why they won't deep clean or replace it; it's a small space and wouldn't cost much. The rest of the room had laminate flooring that seemed clean, but the dirty, stained carpet in the entry is the first thing you see when you walk into the room. It makes a bad impression that sticks with you.
The rest of the room smelled and looked clean, but it could use some updates—especially the bathroom. And the Keurig machine makes sad coffee. Spring for a Nespresso or maybe offer good drip coffee in the lobby, as most inns or hotels do.
Our room had a balcony with a great view of San Francisco and the Oakland Bay Bridge. This was the highlight of our stay at Gables Inn. The inn's location is great—within walking distance of the water and many shops, restaurants and cafes.
If the owners would invest in some updates and train their hospitality staff re: what it means to be hospitable, this place could...
Read moreMy husband and I recently spent a week at The Gables Inn. We based our decision by reading previous reviews of this property in addition to comparison of other accommodations in the area. Its location in Sausalito was ideal for a family event, tourist attractions in the surrounding area (Muir Woods, Napa Valley, Marin Headlands, etc.) and a short ferry journey across to San Francisco. For those of you who want to sight-see Sausalito, the Gables Inn is in easy walking distance to Bridgeway (main street) with shopping, restaurants, ferry terminal and the waterfront. The staff were extremely welcoming, hospitable, and always willing to answer questions or provide suggestions. Michael, the manager, greeted us each morning as we enjoyed the delicious complimentary continental breakfast. In the evenings, we anticipated the complimentary evening wine and cheese selections. It provided a nice break from the days' activities in a serene environment and conversations with Judy at the front desk. It was great to stay in a place that was different than a larger chain hotel. The room was spacious and comfortable. We appreciated the quality daily housekeeping. It is a quiet retreat for travelers and offers good value for the money. The only downside we experienced was a small parking lot. We recommend The Gables Inn as a great option for anyone visiting...
Read moreStayed here for two (2) nights. The hotel location is just perfect and is walking distance to most everything in Sausalito. The hotel is a super cute antique beach house turned into a boutique hotel - perfect for a quiet beach town stay. The room itself (we booked the most basic room) was quite small but clean, and cozy. The bed was very comfortable for sleeping, but not so much for other things as a result of the noisy bedframe and close proximity of other guest rooms... The bathroom had a bathtub with jets - this was lovely! The parking situation ($30 per night) is a bit annoying but this is not a reflection of the hotel as parking is a bit of an annoyance in general in Sausalito as a whole. The hotel has a main lot in front with about 6 parking spaces, and once full guests are directed to the back lot (also right next to the hotel). Once those lots are full, they will direct you to sister lots (also within walking distance but further away). So overall, there is lots of parking either way and parking is the same price - it is merely a matter of convivence. Staff was super friendly and helpful. We would definitely...
