CAUTION: I wanted to write this review because our experience at Angelinos Italian Restaurant in Sausalito was concerning.
I sent an email to the managers, and left them two voicemails, hoping that if I got a positive response, I would not post anything. However, I never heard from them, so i decided to write this review
Angelino Restaurant is in the part of Sausalito with the most stunning views, especially at night. When we arrived the place was busy, and the waitstaff was busy too.
Our waiter was cold and distracted, if not uninterested. We had to ask him three times to turn a heat lamp on. We started off with the margherita pizza for an appetizer. It was akin to what one might have at Roundtable Pizza.
Next, we had the caesar salad. The salad was drowned in mayonnaise and tasted store-bought. The croutons were stale.
For our main courses, one friend had the ravioli, the sauce of which tasted as if it had come out of a can. My other friend ordered the fusilli, which was gloppy and overly creamy, and the pasta was lost in the sauce.
A third friend, whose birthday we were celebrating, had the fettuccine. The waiter got her order wrong, bringing something completely different, so we all finished our meals by the time they came back out with her fettucine. Even then it was wrong — a meat pasta rather than the vegetarian she had requested. The quality was similar to what you might have at Noodles and Co., which for the price ($20 and up pizza, $25 for pasta,), was frustrating.
I had the petrale sole, which was thickly breaded and covered with copious amounts of melted butter. The vegetables and roasted potatoes that accompanied it were mediocre at best.
By the time the dessert menus had come, we had had enough and asked for the check. They did comp us one glass of wine due to bringing out the wrong food.
Also, we noticed there was a $2.50 charge on my friend's drink order on the bill. It turns out he was charged $2.50 extra for asking for no ice, which he did not realize until receiving the check!
I get that bartenders may think this is a coy way for the consumer to try to get more alcohol. My friend actually doesn't like the watered down effect of the ice in his drink; regardless. The waiter explained that asking for a drink with no ice meant that he was getting more alcohol and so they had to charge him more. None of us had ever heard of this, and there was no mention of it on the menu or from the waiter. If we hadn't carefully viewed the check, this surcharge would have gone unnoticed. Also, they charged him for a premium gin, even though he had not requested it (and they hadn’t inquired).
I understand that restaurants are having a hard time right now, and my intention is not to hurt any business. That said, I don't want anyone else to go through this experience, as it really put a damper on my friend's birthday.
Although I will never give less than 18% tip, and we did, it still seemed generous given that our waiter was distracted, distant, and it was hard to get his attention, as well as a general lack of communication. I think they were short on staff, so I don't want to judge...
Read moreI live in San Francisco and never mind the drive to beautiful Sausalito, but last night was definitely the last visit at Angelino, Their food is good, last night didn’t disappoint the pizza was good. But the customer service and attention from the server was beyond horrible, I must say I was observing and came to realize my mother (who’s it was the first time in Sausalito and I was thriving to give her the best experience) were being treated differently than everyone else, we are latin and so was the server, the server realized my mother didn’t speak English since I was translating everything for her; and still kept asking for the drinks in English, he just stood there with a bad face and attitude from the beginning, 15 mins later we got some water from them and our drinks got there 27 mins later (they were Diet Coke when we had ordered ginger beer, so it took them another 8 mins to bring them; after I realized that other two tables who got there after we did, got their drinks and appetizers I went and told them we had been ready to order our food, the server said in Spanish in a very rude tone (what do you want?) I ordered pizza;.. he never checked on us, and after 15 from our pizza arriving he brought the check and didn’t say a word, just left it there. It was 49 dls, we payed with a 100 dollar bill, and got 1 dollar back, I got up and told him I gave them 100, he just made a bad gesture and pulled the check tab from me and trew the other 50 in it, didn’t say a word. My mother was very uncomfortable from the way we were being treated, specially since we were able to see the attention our sever would give to the other tables, I believe this is probably one of the first times I have felt discriminated, and the saddest part is we were discriminated by another Latin person,it’s a shame, the place’s food it’s good, it always is, the location it’s great, but the customer service is by far one the worst I...
Read moreIn some ways this is a four star place, but they fall short in enough areas to be just ok - especially considering the tourist prices they charge.
If you get a table up front at the windows it's a pleasant experience with the bay and city views, but only a few tables are at the window so mostly you're back in an old Cafe type setting and if you're in one of the six tables next to the kitchen it's definitely meh.
The pasta dishes are very good, but everything else is just ok and even the pasta doesn't achieve wow status. Have certainly had better across the board.
What holds them back from four stars is horrible espresso (visually unappealing, bitter, and burn your tongue hot) which alone costs a star because that should be an enjoyable end to a meal. How an Italian restaurant touting originality can serve such terrible espresso is bizarre.
Also, their soup and salads are particularly uninspired.
Their deserts are very nice, so a plus there - except I like to have a nice espresso with desert.
All in all, if you don't mind paying $45 (w/Tax, Tip, and Surcharge) for a simple but tasty pasta dish or $7.15 (an odd price, and $9.50 fully loaded) for a horrible Cappuccino AND you get a view table - then Angelino's is a perfectly fine venue.
For me that just adds up to meh and a three star rating.
If you go, stick with pasta and wine plus maybe a desert if you can skip...
