On the waterfront overlooking San Francisco and in the heart of downtown Sausalito, you'll find the Sausalito Bakery and Cafe. We explored the sights and sounds of this artisty charming city before deciding we needed a break. At first glimpse, this tiny cafe isn't appealing. The decor is minimalist, seating is scarce, and you only have about two feet worth of space between the counter and seating area. My first internal reaction was to turn around and find another place to eat before I was stopped by the chef, greeted warmly, and asked what I'd like to eat. The claustrophobia inside my quickly died and I decided to give this place a shot. It couldn't hurt, right?
Disappointed by Fort Bragg (where I chose to spend my 30th birthday), I had high hopes for good eats here. I chose the Chicken Caesar salad sandwich with a cup of chicken noodle soup. I needed the nourishment from these two items to quell my experience of Fort Bragg and also provide enough warmth to battle the fierce wind and cold in San Francisco where I would be ringing in the new year. Sandwiches run about $7-8 here but be warned - they are cash only and luckily there's an ATM inside.
We scooped out the last remaining seat - a booth by the kitchen and dug in. While waiting for our sandwiches, we enjoyed a luscious summer fruit salad. It was a mixture of ripe cantaloupes, succulent pineapple, strawberries, blackberries, and grapes. Yum! It was the perfect starter for the sandwiches that arrived a short while later. My sandwich arrived a little messy which set me a little on a edge. I was instantly expecting the worst but at first bite was immediately proven wrong and all thoughts of Fort Bragg escaped my head. This sandwich was a masterful creation of crisp romaine lettuce, freshly shredded Parmesan cheese, ripe beefy hot house tomatoes, juicy chicken breakfast, and a unique Caesar salad dressing that wasn't the least bit tangy but rather somewhat sweet and a bit spicy. Might I add, this was all served on a warm fresh French roll. Simply amazing! My chicken noodle soup was pure perfection. While I'm used to flat noodles in my soup, I was surprised to see vermicelli but it work with the chunks of chicken, carrots, onion, and celery. My heart and soul were at one with my meal and it was the perfect way to end the day in Sausalito, celebrate my birthday, and ring in the New Year.
Don't let this tiny bakery and cafe fool you. The owners Joshua and Fariba Azar (Iranian) have poured their hearts into building a legacy and it shows. While seated there lost in my meal, I noticed several locals stop by for casual conversation. Fariba greeted them kindly and was ready with their...
Read moreDecided to take a day trip as an SF local. This place was okay. Went there to pass some time with a snack as I waited for the bus. Had a piece of the blueberry banana bread pudding. The sign in display was seen as “blueberry banana bread”, didn’t realize it was bread pudding til my order was repeated back. It was good, ok for the price. I’d been expecting a little more flavor, tbh. Service + atmosphere was decent, of course many tourists (me included, I guess) but could be a nice option as linger + read or chat or work using wifi cafe. Appreciated the single-person bathroom they had available in back of house. Plenty of seating indoor + outdoor for the space’s size. Can see view of SF from the storefront! Several food options on menu + some variety of treats. Didn’t try their coffee or any meals- I’m curious how it is, though I see others review as overpriced. A lox bagel is listed as nearly $17 on the menu, + the bagels were just sitting out uncovered on the counter 🤷🏻
Seems most of Sausalito is overpriced - not surprised, as it appears most who are there are wealthy retired folk or tourists that are also pretty “well off” or saved up for their...
Read moreReally loved this bakery and definitely coming back for more when around the area! It’s a mix of Greek, Italian and French and you have plenty of items to choose from. We had the frittata - huge portion and best I’ve ever had so far. The addition of olives made it amazing baklava - had plenty of flavor and syrup salmon cream cheese bagels - good and comes precut for you. I would go with the plain bagel if you’re not a fan of fennel on your bagels Breakfast croissant sandwich - you get the choice of either ham or bacon. Ham was cut small and had the perfect realty flavor Blueberry banana bread pudding - flavor bomb, not overwhelming with banana and definitely not dry
Big bonus for the friendly service. The guy wearing the chef hat was super cheeky and funny and the other two were very welcoming. Bonus points for the outdoor...
