So this location is severely limited by the geography of Seattle. There are several restaurants just a few blocks over, but it is a pretty rundown dilapidated portion of Seattle with tons of dive restaurants. Also if you're not in the mood for Korean or Vietnamese, you're going to have very limited options.
The rooms are clean and the bedding was very comfortable, actually some of the most comfortable bedding I've ever had in a hotel. Also the front facing rooms have an interesting window that juts out so that you can people watch the streets of Seattle. Bathrooms are very cramped though, and the door oddly swings into the bathroom and almost hits the toilet, that's how cramped it is.
The hotel feels a little pretentious in that they don't have any vending machines, they just have a little fridge up front with a few healthy options in addition to other unhealthy ones like beer or Snickers bar. I mean I get it, candy and whatnot are bad for me except that Snickers are still available in the fridge, but then no other convenient easy to grab things other than some mozzarella cheese or some fresh fruit. I don't know, I think the vending machine system has worked fine for every other hotel on Earth and it wouldn't hurt to have some here
All of the front doors are locked, probably due to dealing with people on the street coming in and causing problems. Unfortunately there's no sign on the door that clearly asks you to knock or ask for someone to buzz you in, so I tried all three doors and at that time there just was nobody at the front desk in sight so it was extremely confusing. After circling back around, someone was at the front desk again and let me in. Some clear signage would be nice.
The worst thing about this hotel though is the parking situation. So they charge $20 a night for parking on top of the room, and that's fine, I understand parking is limited and that not everyone is using a car so for car users to pay a little premium that's okay. What's not okay is that there's no lot attendent or assigned parking, so after my family got done spending 7 hours visiting the space Needle and adjoining museum and art galleries, they came home only to find that no parking space was available.
The parking that was done by other guests was well over the lines causing a lot of awkwardly sized 5 to 7 ft wide gaps. The hotel was unable to find us a spot, so they started asking other guests to leave their rooms and repark their cars. This proved ineffective, and eventually we had to move some supplies for the adjoining restaurant out of the way of one of the marked parking spots to park our car.
Anyway, if you're going to charge for parking either have a lot attendant or have assigned spaces based on the car the guest has so that any offending cars can be towed out of the way in short order. They're well over 50 cars in that lot, meaning that they're taking down over $1,000 a night just on parking, which should be plenty to pay someone just to keep an eye on the lot. Alternatively, assign spaces, tow people who are not in there assigned space, it's very simple solution that I should not be able to come up with off the top of my head in 30 seconds I'm thinking about the problem, especially when this hotel has probably been here for...
Read moreWe picked this location because it was close to UW Hospital, my wife had surgery the next day. It wasn't the first hotel I looked at, although the reviews and pictures had made my decision. Upon arriving, entering the hotel it felt very welcoming. The lobby was well lit, and vibrant. We were checked in by a very nice gal, I wish I remembered her name as she was very professional and had great customer service. I used to manage a hotel so I always get excited to have the opportunity to speak to other establishment staff, ask questions and get a understanding of who they are in a friendly manner. I'm not sure although I feel she might be a supervisor or a manager. The night before, when I was booking on the website I was impressed with their booking system, it was fast and my Google assistant basically booked it for me along with Google pay, later on I got a text message for easy check in procedures, which I decided to not to use, only because I enjoy human interactions. After booking the hotel I called to get a vocal confirmation, a gentleman named Porter assisted me and answered all my questions. He was polite, and very knowledgeable, unfortunately I didn't get to meet him during my stay. Back to the hotel, after checking in we got a parking pass and found the secure parking lot. It had adequate lighting, was clean and felt safe. Up to the room we went, and was as expected from the photos. Very clean room and bathroom. I like their style and theme with the Pineapples, everything was pinappley. Even the toilet paper looked like a pineapple. The only thing we noticed was just a little dust on the lamp shades, no I didn't purposely throw on the white gloves and start feeling above the picture frames and TV, although the thought did cross my mind. My wife and I traveled down to the car after awhile to gather some belongings that we had forgotten and had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman named Cecil, at least I believe I remembered it correctly. My wife even mentioned to him he had kind face, only because well, he did! Joking aside, he was very helpful and handed us some pineapple sugar cookies! After a bit of conversation we got back to the room. If you're a troll and love to sleep on rock mattresses, beware, this isn't the place to stay! The beds felt like you were sleeping on clouds, and the pillows were nothing we've ever experienced. Probably the most comfortable bed we've ever slept on while traveling. Beds are by far the most important, aside from cleanliness, which in my honest opinion, this hotel has 100% met those expectations. Speaking of expectations, as good and addicting the pineapple sugar cookies are, I would suggest corporate or management to flavor them with some pineapple, it would add to the experience, my first bite I was expecting it, although they were still good. Overall, with a important surgery the next day, the stress and worry, this place was comforting with professional employees. It was one thing that went right with so many other things in life that were going wrong. Thanks...
Read moreBusiness travelers and locals, stay away. The University Inn is a 1962 building that was acquired by Staypineapple in 2020 and has since been dressed up as a boutique hotel. Calling this place a hotel is dishonest at best, and charging an egregious $200 a night for a queen bed is down right disrespectful.
After my recent visit I now understand that Staypinapple Hotels are for a very specific type of traveler. If you are a couple traveling for leisure and you have pets, this "hotel" is amazing. I'm a local on the other hand and I just needed a place to stay for the night.
I'll start off by saying that the check-in staff were great! They were always kind and had great answers to anything I needed and check in was easy. However, when I got to my room it reeked of rotting wood and pet dander. You could could hear the pain of the 62 year old floorboards as they creaked underneath the damp carpet. I'm not normally sensitive to pets but whatever animal stayed in the room before me caused me to have an allergic reaction, I woke up wheezing with bright bloodshot eyes. Also the curtains wouldn't close all the way so I got to look at the UW Tower and an abandoned crack house on NE 42nd street all night.
I will say, the soap smelled amazing and the duvets on the bed were comfortable but they don't make up for the fact that I paid $200 to stay in a motel, that didn't even serve breakfast. My favorite part was the stuffed dog they put on my bed, if only the animal that stayed in my room before me were a stuffed toy as well.
In the morning when I was able to pull myself out of my allergic coma I was disappointed to find out that Staypineapple does not offer continental breakfast, but instead bicycles and a sparkling water bar, spectacular.
I understand now that really you're paying for the novelty and branding of Staypineapple, and again this place is great for couples with pets that are traveling for leisure. Traveling couples are going to want to have breakfast at a local spot. They're going to want sparkling water and bikes to take around the city. But if you're in Seattle for business or if you're a local, stay far away from here. I would recommend to book at the arctic club downtown instead, they have similar prices for a king bed, you don't wake up with an allergic reaction, and they have the courtesy of feeding you...
