Peace Park, Seattle, Washington, is a serene urban oasis dedicated to fostering peace and understanding. The park's central feature, a poignant bronze statue of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who died from radiation sickness caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, however, has been stolen in July 2024. The statue, depicting Sasaki holding a paper crane, a symbol of hope and peace, was a powerful reminder of the devastating consequences of war and inspired visitors to work towards a more peaceful world. Despite the loss of this iconic statue, Peace Park remains a place for reflection and community gathering. The park's natural beauty, including a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers, continues to offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Visitors can still enjoy leisurely strolls or quiet moments of meditation along the park's pathways. While the statue's absence is deeply felt by many, the park's mission to promote peace and understanding remains steadfast. The community is rallying together to raise funds for a replacement statue, and the park continues to host events and activities that celebrate peace and diversity. Peace Park, though diminished by the theft, still serves as a reminder of the importance of peace and the enduring spirit of hope. Hope the stolen statue of Sadako Sasaki can be recovered soon because the statue serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of peace and the catastrophic consequences of war.

Not your typical park, but very interesting to see in person. A small strip of land with two sculptures. The Thousand Cranes Sculpture was my favorite. No paper cranes this time of year though. They must have vanished during the last Winter storm. The Sadako pole has several words of wisdom printed on its sides.

The statue is meaningful and beautiful, great public art in an otherwise not so charming intersection. Every time I run by, the colorful paper cranes just warm me up a little bit. On the other hand, a homeless person was sleeping right next to the statue as I passed by this morning, which is quite a shame.
