I came into Morgantown with my husband to help family (including a 3-month old staying with us) move into a new home. We chose Hotel M because it was near the home they were planning on moving into. Ultimately, we would go through three bedrooms and demand a refund for the hotel service, amenities, and cleanliness -- including broken AC and a possible bedbug infestation.
Initially, the price was decent, and Google reviews were mostly positive. I hadn't checked Yelp, and I booked the hotel. When we entered our room, we immediately noticed a deep, musty smell, but it was raining outside, and we attributed it to the damp. The room wasn't particularly clean; the bathtub was red with rust, and the floor filthy, but we just wanted one night, so we stayed. I took a nap while the rest of the family ran an errand.
When I woke, I noticed several bites all over my body, including parts that should have been covered by the blanket (so probably not a mosquito). I was immediately concerned about bedbugs, so I looked online for signs and scoured the bedsheets for the hallmark rust-colored stains. By that time, my husband had returned, and he looked with me. We both found some unusual-looking spots, so I called the front desk and asked (1) whether they had a bedbug infestation and (2) whether they could send someone to check it out, as I wasn't sure and presumed they would have more experience. (Musty smells, by the way, are also signs of bedbug infestation).
The woman at the front desk -- without bothering to look at our room -- said they did not have bedbugs. I insisted she send someone, and she did: a young man who didn't even come into the room and instead asked about our dog (we were told the hotel was pet-friendly). She called back and wanted to charge an additional fee for the dog ($10), but wouldn't address the bed bug issue, continually denying they had any. She finally agreed to let us change rooms.
We paid the dog fee and moved to another room. My husband went first, and as it was raining outside, he placed a hand towel at the door so we wouldn't track rainwater in. We walked in, and the room stank of smoke. We had an infant, and they advertised all their rooms as smoke-free, so we requested yet another room. They agreed but wanted to charge us for the use of the hand towel ($7).
In the third room, we checked the sheets, hoping that the third time's the charm. Unfortunately, at that point, we realized that neither the Wifi nor the AC worked, and our room had ants. We let the AC run for at least half an hour before we reported the issue. At that point, we were fed up. They never checked the initial room for an infestation, blamed us for requesting a clean room, and couldn't provide the basic services they advertised. We demanded a refund and were told to take it up with the manager, who would return in an hour. After an hour, we went to the front desk.
The manager never arrived; we only managed to speak with him indirectly on the phone, and he refused a refund and to talk to us in person. The woman at the front desk continued to tell us that "It was not the Marriott." We eventually left.
Hotel M is not the Marriott, nor is it Microtel, Springhill Suites, or Clarion Inn, all of which are local budget hotels comparable (or cheaper) in price but infinitely better in value (we stayed at each of these during this trip). I understand that Hotel M is a smaller business, but that is no excuse for such a significant lapse in basic cleanliness. The hotel was disgusting, and I would strongly encourage any traveler to book elsewhere.
NOTE: The photos below are from the third room, which was as filthy as the other two. We didn't anticipate such problems and didn't document evidence from...
Read moreMy sign should have been, when checking in, an unhappy guest returned the room key with a " That room is not fit for an animal to stay in!" But, because it was the day of the homecoming game for WVU, and most other reasonably priced hotels were full, we proceeded with check in. We had 2 rooms booked. Upon entry of the first room, things weren't great but nothing popped up telling us we should run. Until, we pulled back the sheets and noticed they were not clean. The second room however, was a disaster----not cleaned and definitely not inhabitable. We approached the 'owner-worker-clerk?????' and his response was to give (from his back pocket mind you) the 'master hotel key'. He named two different rooms and said that we could check them both out and see which one we wanted to stay in. And, buckle up.....this is where is gets good!! The first room we entered clearly smelled strongly of marijuana and men' cologne. During our inspection, we came across a shower- that had recently been showered in- the walls were wet! So, we gave that room a strike and headed to room number 2. And why we didn't take pictures of this one is beyond me---I think we were dying of laughter and disbelief at this point. This room came with bright red satin sheets on the bed along with a pair of men's glasses left on the side table----clearly someone's room! We declined both of these rooms so the gentleman (still not sure of his role) said he would have the initial room cleaned. So fast forward, after the game and our tailgate festivities ( thank god for a little booze at this point) we returned to the hotel. The room that was to be cleaned had a fresher smell..........but the only light that worked in the room was in the bathroom. (this is where the buzz from the tailgate came in handy---we were hysterical). We went to the lobby-front desk- random room where you check in???? whatever it was to see if we could find someone. The only thing there was a phone to call the person in charge. When he picked up I explained my unhappiness with the continued situation and his was extremely rude and agitated and told me to leave the key and go somewhere else if I was so unhappy. (Dude--I wish I could at this point. If I would have had enough blankets to survive in my car at 30 degrees that night--I would have) Anyway, he said he would send someone. That someone came- ripped a cord from one lamp to another to reach a plug. The other lamps had no bulbs---and we were told they wouldn't have bulbs until the next day. Again we laughed hysterically----at this point, we couldn't make this stuff up!!!! We ended up staying there---slept fully clothed not touching much- and woke early and got the hell out of dodge. So very long story short-----the pictures on line are FAKE- as are the 5/5 star reviews! There is no banquet hall and the rooms in the pics are NOT what you get. That front desk area doesn't exist either. This place should be sited by the health department (which I have a call into) and turned in to the BBB which is also in the works!!! 1000% False advertisement that reels you in to...
Read moreMy husband and I stayed here because most hotels were booked in the area for parents weekend. I really wanted to be able to leave a good review here as I had decent hopes for this place. It seemed like reviews were awful in the past & better recently, so we assumed management must be trying to fix things, but we were wrong. Our experience was not good at all. First, as soon as you walked in the room, the smell was almost unbearable. It was a smoke and mildew smell mixed with cleaning product. It was so strong, I could barely sleep. No matter what we did, we couldn't air it out. The bedding and decor was cheap & awful. It looked like something out of the 80s all black with huge bright blue roses on the bed, curtains, shower curtain, toilet seat and mats. Lighting was terrible, you could barely see in the room and the curtains barely covered the window. Worst of all was the dirty bed :( I wanted to puke when I lifted the blanket up. There was hair and stains on the blanket, sheets & pillow cases. One pillow case had grass and dirt all over one side, another one had black dots ALL OVER it and I'm really praying that wasn't bed bug droppings, but wouldn't doubt it. I will say the staff was very nice when we called to ask them to change the bedding. They first came back with a sheet that had a cigarette hole in it and had to go get another one. The final one seemed clean, but who knows. The replaced pillow cases still had stains all over them. We were there from Friday night through Sunday at 11am and no one came to our room once to clean it or bring new towels/supplies etc. The floor was so dirty we wouldn't even walk on it without shoes on. The water in the shower took a while to drain so you were standing in dirty water. We were honestly so grossed out and would have definitely just left to stay somewhere else if it wasn't all booked up for parents weekend. I will definitely never be coming back here. I honestly feel that any good reviews they have come from them greeting you in the parking lot as soon as you're about to check out to ask for a good review. That was so tacky and we couldn't believe they didn't check on us once or bring us any new towels or anything at all, but had the nerve to come up to us in the parking lot to ask for a good review. Again, I'll say they were very nice when speaking to you, but that's about the only good thing I can say about this place. Also pictures online are extremely deceiving - it looks nothing like that! I took plenty of pictures I can share of the reality of the room. I wish we would have had a better experience, but it was honestly the worst hotel I've...
