We were very excited to have my daughter's wedding at the beautiful setting of Hayley Mansion in Mystic, Ct. Approximately 4 months prior to to wedding date we went to the tasting and my daughter and her now husband made their choices for the cocktail hour hors D'oeurves, and the dinner choices for the salad, appetizer and main courses. These choice were given via email as requested to the wedding coordinator and they acknowledged receiving them. Then 6 weeks prior the the date we met in person, with Lianna for a detail meeting. Then, a month later which was 1 1/2 weeks before the wedding a new coordinator took over and we again had a long detail phone call to go over details and 3 days later 1 week prior to the date the bride and groom again went to the venue to go over details again and sign off. Unfortunately, on the day of the wedding many of the "details" had been forgotten, lost or overlooked. Mysteriously we did not get the crab cake appetizer, in fact, we didn't get any appetizer which we paid for. When I asked the banquet manager where it was she was shocked and looking at her list realized someone had forgotten to write it in and obviously no one took the time to notice this omission and question it. I can only assume it was done to save money on their behalf not ours for sure. And the wedding cake was to be cut and placed on a rectangle table with the appropriate sign indicating which of the 3 flavors that were being offered. That also did not happen, instead the servers who appeared to lack experience especially with serving cake and coffee so that , we literally had to run after them to get any, and never mind being offered a second cup!! This was only some of the multiple mistakes made throughout our experience working with them, too many to list. I understand we all make mistakes but after so many detail meetings and their reassuring us they all had it under control we trusted them and did not feel the need to look over their shoulder. Apparently we were very wrong and I now regret not hovering over them. They did say they apologize for the missing appetizer but also went on to blame my daughter and never took any responsibility for all that went wrong. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from having their wedding here because it is a very lovely venue with the mansion and nice property. However, I would very strongly urge you to either have a wedding coordinator who is working for you or have a family member or friend who is aware of the details to be sure to carefully check both prior to with the final list and the day of the wedding. Read moreBeautiful venue for a wedding! The food was good, but the staff left much to be desired. This was the type of wedding where you have to choose your meal when you RSVP. Our waitress lost the ticket for our table and was the annoyed that we didn't know what we had ordered, almost 2 months ago! She actually told me "then you'll get whatever is left." She ultimately found the ticket, but that was a huge turnoff. Then the bartender packed up the bar and stopped service 40 minutes before the reception was scheduled to end! Food excellent, view excellent, staff not so much.
After the reception the bride's dad had arranged for a fire at the Harbor House restaurant. About 50 of us headed down the hill. I went inside and ordered a drink for myself and my husband and opened a tab, and brought the drinks outback. The bartender was more than happy to serve me both without my husband being with me. Same with all my friends who ordered for spouses and friends. The issue of poor customer service came when my husband when to get us a second round of drinks and was denied service. ALL OF A SUDDEN there is a law that one person cannot order 2 drinks. So I went inside to ask about it since it hadn't been a problem when I ordered. The woman behind the bar, who claimed to be the manger was extremely hostile before I could even ask what the issue was. She obviously wanted no part of having us in her bar. Now I know what your thinking, must be wasted after the wedding, not the case! My husband had been sdkef to sing at the fire, do we didn't drink much at the wedding. The manager became very hostile and confrontational. After about a minute of speaking to her I asked her to close my tab, as I would not need anything else from her. She continued to raise her voice to me and berate me, so I'll continued to ask her to close my tab, about a dozen times. She finally told me her bartender would go it when he had time and walked away. She then turned back and stated that she was going to dump the drinks my husband had ordered earlier, as if I should be upset about it. I closed my tab and went back to the fire. Shortly after she proceeded to lock the door so nobody could order or use the restroom. This was at 11:30 and the bar was scheduled to close at 2. My overall assessment good...
Read moreI rated this 2 out of 5 stars because the room rate did NOT match the experience which is too bad because the property itself has so much potential. ||||Where to begin. We stayed for a weekend to leaf peep and shop/dine in Mystic. Upon arrival, we had lunch at the restaurant and the weather allowed us to sit on the deck with a nice view of the bay. Our server was adorable and cheery. We then checked in to our room (front desk staff not as cheery) and immediately was disappointed. ||||Previous reviews pointed out the rooms were clean but dated and I would say the rooms were downright tired and depressing. Everything in the room was dated, including the 2ftx3ft shag bathmats on each side of the bed. I was wigged out by the fact the "mini fridge" was located under the bathroom sink but that's just me. Our room no where near resembled the photos on the website. The "cable HD flat screen TV" was barely big enough to see from the bed and the level of cable service was most likely the basic package. The fireplace was a nice amenity though and we did use it. ||||The floor to ceiling mirrors surrounding the spa tub was unnerving to say the least and the shower was downright dangerous. If you weren't careful, you could have scalded yourself from the temperature or slipped and suffered great injury from the sloping sides of the tub/shower surround; all in white which proved to be a spacial distortion nightmare. No grab bars either. ||||I suppose after seeing how dated the room was, I should not have been surprised when all weekend, we heard the upstairs guests walking, showering, flushing the toilet. ||||I felt compelled to write this review because I was so sad to have spent all in, just shy of $400 a night and only to be so disappointed in the...
