Expensive, but very good. If you can afford it, it is well worth it.
After many hours of airline delay, we arrived after midnight -- to find gluten-free cookies left out (I can only eat gluten free, and could find nothing in the airport) and brandy in the room. Perfect!
And the rest of our stay went similarly. Josephine was always available and attentive. Breakfast was flavorful and nicely presented. (Wonderful omlettes one day; very good gluten-free blueberry pancakes another day.) The afternoon always saw popcorn, cookies and muffins available -- as well as a bottle of sherry.
Our bedroom, bathroom, and much of the house, was large enough and decorated with lovely original murals and decorative arts. The bed was nicely firm and easy to sleep on. The bath off of the bedroom was modern and somewhat spacious, with a great stone-tiled shower. The house is a very nice (late nineteenth-century I believe) house, with a porch that would have been great had the weather been warmer. There is a really pleasant common dining room with both small and large tables, as well as a small front parlor. The only thing this house lacks is another small parlor or a larger front parlor.
The house is very conveniently located, within easy walking distance (1/3 mile?) to the Mystic Seaport -- and 1/2 a mile from the downtown shops and restaurants. The regional aquarium (good but very pricey) is just a few miles to the north.
I would definitely recommend this B&B to anyone who feels they...
Read moreMystic is charming, and there is no more charming place to stay than the Mermaid Inn.| Located on a quiet street a few minutes' walk from the center of town, there is free parking.| Prominently welcoming us on arrival was a plate of still-warm-from-the-oven oatmeal/nut/chocolate chunk cookies. We felt at home right away.| We were able to get the Mermaid room, which although a bit compact, was beautifully decorated, well appointed, immaculately clean, and had everything we needed.| Breakfast, as others have noted, was superlative. It is an art to perfectly turn out an omelet, and Josephine, who joined us to chat in the mornings, has the gift. She brushes it off as nothing, but good luck trying to duplicate the (for example) french toast at home (hint, start with challa).| We were fortunate to stay several days, enjoying our morning coffee on the gazebo, getting tips from Josephine on good places to visit and restaurant recommendations.| The Mermaid Inn has been named 'Best in Connecticut' in several categories - well deserved.| To Josephine, should you read this, heartfelt thanks for the warmth of your hospitality. Read moreJosephine made our visit to Mystic so relaxing and enjoyable. The inn is lovely. We stayed in the Blue Room. Our accommodations made us feel so comfortable and at home. There was nothing pretentious about Josephine or her inn. Like we were visiting close friends. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch swing and talking about where we would go. There was no rush to get anywhere as the location allowed us to park the car and walk through the lovely historic neighborhood to the waterside Mystic park and town. After our Argia sunset cruise, we enjoyed dinner at S&P Oyster and a stroll back to the inn. Over breakfast the next morning, Josephine shared her story with us and it meant a lot to us. Connecting with an innkeeper enhances the visit. The recommendation to visit Enders Island was so appreciated. We spent almost two hours walking the property and taking in the gardens, views and chapels. We can't thank her enough for telling us about it. I'll be bringing my sister and sister-in-law for a...
