I have stayed at the older Holiday Inn express in Hermitage and wanted to use the newest one in the area. It was all a new property should be. New everything- parking area, building etc.
But the architect or maybe the interior decorator liked hard surfaces and clean straight lines in the walls and floor much more than I did. There is lots of cold ceramic or stone in the building including the bathroom and entrance to your room. You need shoes or slippers to walk on these cold floors which are beautiful and clean as a whistle. But I like a floor I can go bare foot on without getting a chill. The floor covering in the room was a very short tight weave which also gave the impression of a stark quality, nothing soft or fuzzy in the least. When I entered the room about 8 p.m. the temperature was about 60 degrees and turning up the thermostat did not take away the chill on the stone/ceramic bathroom floors. I even ran the tub full of hot water to make the bathroom more comfortable. The outside temperature was about 45 degrees. I think that is enough to get my point across: This brand new, lovely, fair priced property has everything going for it but a sense of welcoming warmth. It felt to me like the decorator must have recently designed an efficiency, low maintenance building rather than designing it around welcoming warm spaces. My over all impression was "a cool reception" from the building, but the staff did a fine job. My experience at breakfast was "lids, lids, lids". A plastic lid covered every hot food item and there was not space next to the hot tray to put the lid except on another lid or on the counter. Very inconvenient way to set up the food in teared shelves. I guess it was all about protecting the food from contamination. Luck for me there were only a couple of people there getting food or the line would have been rather long with all the taking off and putting back on of lids. Even the heated up sweet rolls had a throw away clear plastic cover over them that had to be removed and replaced on the heated holding tray. Again, not a feeling of "welcome" open access. Also the food was kind of pre-prepared feeling. I did not enjoy this breakfast even though the area was new, clean, bright etc. Just missed the feeling of what I would have expected when it was new and a lot of money was spent on making it attractive. Next visit I will go back to the older property. I am sorry I have been disappointed when I know the investment in the "latest" Holiday Inn Express design should give the owners and the customers a warm happy feeling. Just feel short of my other Holiday Inn Express stays with an earlier design and...
Read moreI gave this property 4 stars for overall exerience because of three small issues we found: 1. Bed just a bit too low for my husband to get out of; 2. Soap dispenser in shower way too far from the bench; and 3. NO breakfast to-go bags are prepared on a Sunday!! Otherwise, this is the perfect property for a relaxing stay! I would recommend staying at this property, just try not to be hungry Sunday morning. (Sorry that the three attached photos are sideways)
We discovered the New Castle HIX this past weekend. I wanted to write our review while everything is fresh in our minds. From the moment we entered, we knew this was a new property and was being well-maintained. Patty, the Front Desk Clerk, was more than welcoming. She was friendly, kind and very insightful with our questions about the property and the New Castle area. She quickly and efficiently got us checked into our King Accessible Roll-in Shower room. As my husband uses a power wheelchair we wanted to be assured that the room would work for him and his large chair. We walked into the room and were so happy with what we saw. The room was large and had plenty of room for my husband to do laps in his chair. It is very hard to find rooms this accommodating for a power wheelchair. We noticed right away that the bed was much lower (HIX removed the box springs and placed the mattress on two covered wooden boards). I read a review from June 2020 where an older, smaller, woman complained that the bed was too high to get in and out of. That is a common problem, especially with disabled people. Some cannot lift their legs or bodies onto a higher bed. Although it made it just a wee bit tough to get out of, it was a great solution!
The second issue we had was that the soap dispenser is too far from where my husband needed to sit while showering. Obviously he could not reach it. It should have been placed on the wall in the center of the shower closer to the bench. Also... please hang a shower curtain. You still need privacy and because there is no curtain.... water was everywhere which I feel is a BIG liability on HIX's part because someone will slip and fall!!
The third disappointing issue we found was that we were told that NO breakfast to go bags are prepared on Sundays! WHAT? Why is that any different from any other day? You still have guests who may need to eat a granola bar, or muffin or a piece of fruit in order to take medication. DUH... Forcing guests to BUY things to eat is a definite insult!! We get the whole Covid thing, but if you are making up to-go bags during the week and on a Saturday, do it...
Read moreWas looking for a room with two queen beds and a full walk in or roll in handicapable shower. After the wonderful girl (working the desk late night til 10pmł, showed us a few rooms with other options, none which were EXACTLY what we wanted but room 315 was as close as I was going to get to what would work for what I needed. The previous night, I had stayed at the Holiday Inn, in Boardman, OH 44512 and room 212 had everything we needed. The bathroom there was perfect! I'll remember the Boardman bathroom for a lifetime. This New Castle location, is only 3months old and has a lot of nice features that the Boardman location had as well. The pool is smaller than the one in Boardman. This pool is heated, has a 3'ft and 4ft depth. Very kid friendly. Open 11am to 11pm. Towels are provided. This location boasts patio space for a nice breakfast, which they provide the next day, at no additional charge. The Boardman location, does have a patio as well though it is in the middle of a very bustling township. If heavy traffic is your thing you'll be right at home. Speaking of sounds. The New Castle location does seem to be franchised. And so a few corners seem to have been cut. When you walk down the hall to your room, you can hear whatever is going on in other peoples rooms. Not very private for that romantic get away. I overheard another guest say the elevator kept them up all night. My room was across from the elevator, I only heard the annoying buzz of the fridge. The room over-all was so beautiful. My girls and I had a blast! I loved that I was offered the 2pm check-out time. I wasn't offered that in Boardman, but I DID have very very sound-proof walls and that huge shower and could check out at noon. Maybe the check out time has something to do with the time of day you rent the room? I didn't ask. They may have sound-proofed better because of the increase in noise from the amount of traffic in Boardman, compared to this New Castle location. I did find the comforter, though much warmer than the almost hospital er-like blanket, to be stiff and of low quality materials. At least the hospital blanket could fall around your body shape. The comforter at the New Castle location was as comforting as grabbing a piece of left over carpet and throwing that over you, it would lay across the body in the same stiff and rigid manner. Maybe after its washed more it will reach that perfect synthetic...
