We saw this place in a magazine and came here for a special occasion, splurging for the finest room. We were so glad we did. The B&B is lovingly restored and decorated in gorgeous Victorian style with exceptional wallpaper, beautiful paintings, and great furniture everywhere you look. We stayed in the same room as former President Carter and it was magnificent even just looking up at the ceiling. The mansion was rented out on the main floor for a wedding rehearsal dinner, so it looked stupendous.||It‘s clearly more formal than most B&Bs, so there was almost no contact with the very talented, super hard working host, Joe, but we met and talked with a very nice woman employee whose daughter had had her wedding here-lucky daughter!||Unlike every other B&B we've been to, it didn't include a hot breakfast, but they provided delicious pastries, muffins, fruit instead, delivered to our door under silver trays, plus we had a kitchenette with a small fridge, toaster, microwave, sink. There was milk and cold cereal selection. After dinner nearby we settled in for some dvd in our small, comfy den, off our bedroom. The room was quiet and comfortable for sitting in, especially with the fluffy robes.||I can say that this was the most enjoyable hotel or B&B stay we've ever had in our decades of world and domestic travel because of the sheer beauty and sense of luxury. Best of all, we didn't find it too expensive for all that was included.||This was truly a memorable experience, so treat yourself for a special occasion if you're near or passing through. Not all the rooms are as spectacular as this room, but were glad we spent the extra...
Read moreI'm sure this is a great place to get married or impress a business associate. The restoration is astonishing and the building is magnificent. A lot of work went into bringing this mansion back to life, including period furnishings and an abundance of art and photos on three living levels. ||We were comfortable and the owner was helpful and polite. The room was well stocked with traveler needs, including toothbrushes. However, our stay here did not include two things we count on in a B&B experience: (1) a welcoming common room to have a glass of wine and (2) a real breakfast. We might have been able to find a place to sit in the library but not the ladies' or mens' parlors. Frankly all the furnishings looked like don't-sit-on-me antiques. You wouldn't set your wine glass down on any of the tables. We had our drinks in the butler's pantry and then wandered around admiring everything as if we were in an art gallery -- look but don't touch. It was impressive, but not welcoming.||Breakfast turned out to be do-it-yourself carbs. A kitchenette in our room (no chance to mingle with other guests at a common table) held cereals, pop tarts, and fruit. The fridge was stocked with water, juice (with sugar), yogurt (with sugar), and milk. A breakfast tray was delivered to our door at the hour of our choosing (thank you), with danish, bran muffins, and bananas. We made our own coffee. Some of the creamers were turning to cheese.||I might give the place a better score if we had gone for a different reason. But the Mansion was listed as a B&B and we've...
Read moreThere aren't words to describe the amazing atmosphere that the owner, Joe Matteo, has created in this spectacular mansion. I have been in many victorian house museums and victorian Bed and Breakfasts and this is top of the list. You feel the splendor of days gone by the moment you enter the massive front doors. Each room has been decorated and restored to reflect the opulence of victorian days in such exquisite detail. We stayed in Amelia's room and it was so magical that I thought I would never be able to go to sleep for the sheer excitement of being there, however, the bed was the most comfortable I had ever slept on and I slept like a baby. I felt like I was living a dream come true to be able to sleep in such a beautiful room and simply felt as though I had been swept away to Highclere Castle. We also had great fun exploring the town on our bicycles and the riverwalk was lovely. Although we had toured the mansion before, this was our first opportunity to spend the night and it was a night I will...
