There is a reason for the perfect review scores on the Hoge-Wood House, mostly due to how likable Page and Larry are. No one could dislike them. They seem to care a great deal about pleasing their guest. We felt like we were with old friends in their company. The house is a late 19th century, very charming, Queen Ann style. In my opinion, any renovations appeared minimal and did not take away from the original period design. You'll feel like you just stepped back to the turn of the century when you are inside the home. The trim work, doors and windows all appear original to me. Original plaster walls too! They have added storm windows and doors but from the inside they are not really noticeable. As for the wood floors and stairs, not one creak or squeak. I'm not sure if the floors are heart pine or hardwood but they are rock solid. The 120 year old doors would not cooperate with us but we were so comfortable it mattered little. Outside, the weather was hot and very humid. Inside the home the air was cool and dry. Yes, upstairs as well. They must have an excellent HVAC system. My wife Julie wanted me to comment about how clean the guest side of the house was. This is continuously lived in, working B&B and it is full of guest oriented items and needs. By some standards, the parlor, den and dining rooms may seem a bit cluttered, but really, the home is so warm and inviting you can not help but feel relaxed and secure. Every piece of decor is interesting. The house has a great spirit and feel to it. There might be fancier mansions on the block but I would not feel any more comfortable elsewhere. We felt perfectly at home. Wilmington's 3rd street can be busy and noisy but that old house is so solid and thick you can not hear the outside world. We slept wonderfully! Our bed was very comfortable. I have not slept on a better mattress. Leave your car parked at Hoge-Wood. They have off street parking (nice big lot). Downtown Wilmington is a short, pleasant walk past other beautiful historical homes. Breakfast was awesome each day. I'll let others go on and on about the waffles, bacon and fresh fruit. Read moreMy husband, niece & I stayed at the Hoge-Wood House B&B for a long weekend. The home is warm, inviting, very clean & comfortable. The bed was very comfortable. The hosts, Page & Larry are awesome. They fixed a different full breakfast each day for us, including Page's wonderful home-made jams and strawberry pancake syrup. One day we were going fishing and leaving before the normal 8:30 breakfast time. We told Page we couldn't have breakfast that day, and Page said they'd have our breakfast early for us. That was above and beyond the call of duty, and much appreciated. They even insisted we borrow one of their coolers for the boat for our food & drinks, and they packed it with ice for us. They also let us keep the fish we caught inside (in a cooler of course!). They have a well-stocked library of books, games & DVDs. It was like having our own private red box downstairs.
The house itself is just blocks from the downtown Wilmington waterfront with restaurants, shopping, and more. It was a great visit; we'll definitely return. I highly...
Read moreMy husband and I were only in town for one night, but this place was AMAZING - I wish we could have stayed longer! We stayed Leilani's Room. It was spacious and the bed was ridiculously comfortable. There was a mini fridge with cold soda waiting for us. They also provide water bottles you can take home after your stay and there is a water machine just down the hall from the room. There is also a TV and DVD player in the room and there is a large collection of DVDs downstairs that you are welcome to borrow. Page was incredibly warm and helpful. She gave us great suggestions for dining and things to do in the Wilmington area. It is located very close to Front Street and the Riverwalk area - it is an easy walk. We didn't even take our car when we went out for the evening and had a great time. Breakfast was to die for. People are not exaggerating about the pecan waffles - they were great. If you are looking for a B&B in the Wilmington area stop your search now and book a room at the Hoge-Wood House - you will not be...
