I ended up in Wilmington due to a myriad of reasons that were entirely out of my control--long story short, I'm not sure I'd have ever ended up there on a trip if those reasons hadn't happened. If there's one thing I'm grateful about those reasons for though, it's that they led me to Gravity Records which was plain and simple one of the coolest record stores I've set foot in. I knew, soon as I walked in, that this place was legit and within minutes I was finding weirdo avant garde classical, James Blood Ulmer, and other goodies. The owner and employees were pretty delighted to see a freak like me come through to talk to about weirdo music and commiserate over life in a record shop (I worked in one for years) and the whole experience was just great. Their grading, their prices, and the atmosphere was everything you love to see. The idiosyncrasies and warmth that you can only get at an independent record store were in full force. Wilmington has a gem and I hope the locals recognize how...
Read moreNice combination of re-pressing and new records vs vintage digs they find and appraise during field trips. Love that they also refurbish speakers, receivers, record players (as well as offer new stuff). Layout is great. You don't have to dig for hours to find something, because they only stock so much, but there is quality. I always find something. Beyond that... used to live there and so visit during long weekend vacations, etc... but love their social media system of selling records on FB and IG, etc. Just makes sense and so I buy from them and they ship to me here in ATL.
Also big players in their local community and well, that's what places like record stores should do these days. Keeping the dream alive. Especially in the hellscape of garbage quality/selection music...
Read moreI love record stores, wish there were more of them, and always make a point of checking out any that I run across when I travel, but to paraphrase the Beach Boys, I can never wait to get back to the best record store in the world. It's not just that the prices are good, the selection of used LPs impeccably well-judged and reliably quality controlled, but the human touch is what clinches it. Matt is the coolest business owner I've ever met, and the experience of flipping through these racks is far superior to ebaying or the like, and you very often find things you never expected, far below internet prices. There's no way I could list all the outstanding deals I've run across over the years; the secret is to go often! It's a great place to browse and have a friendly...
