I flew to Montevideo the third week of August and booked Hotel Alvear online, I thought for three days, but ended up having to stay in town until after Labor Day, and kept adding one or two more days during my first week. Altogether, I stayed for two weeks. Having family in Montevideo, this is my second hotel stay in the city. I was pleasantly surprised with the level of service provided by my fellow citizens.||||Location couldn't be better. Very centrally located, just a few steps from the main downtown street (18 de Julio) and three restaurants (one at the corner) and two across the street), grocery store one block down, bakery next door, pharmacy half a block, and very accessible transportation to most places I needed to go to.||||The first room I got the night I arrived (sixth floor) wasn't bad (comfortable king size bed) but the bathroom was so tiny (very hard to get in) and the safe not working properly, that I asked to be moved the following morning. It had also not been fully clean prior to my arrival as evidenced by some left over ashes or dirt on one night table.||||The second room I got in the 5th floor had a larger bathroom but the room itself was in pretty bad shape. Paint peeling off from the walls, window sills and frame covered in heavy rust, and a window that didn't close properly and would let the rain come in. ||||Both these rooms were facing to the back of the hotel; terrible view, but given the rates and how little time I spent inside, it was ok. ||||The most important thing to me was that both rooms had comfortable beds, new and clean linen, and new and clean towels. That's a must even for inexpensive hotels.||||When I decided to stay longer, I asked for a better room. Cesar, one of the receptionists, together with one of the chamber maids (Mariana), recommended and found me a room facing the street that was in good condition. Not only that, but one Saturday night where the hotel had no availability on hotels.com, Cesar still found me a room so I didn't have to move to a different hotel for just one night. ||||The new room (this one in the first floor and facing the street) was very comfortable and had been partially updated. I stayed in this room for about a week and would definitely book it again. ||||Breakfast was great. Every day we had a choice of breads, sweet rolls, cheese, salami, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, fresh OJ, yogurt, coffee, tea, etc. Plenty to choose from.||||Wi-Fi was great in the first two rooms (5th and 6th floors), but very spotty and slow, dropping the signal often in the first floor.||||I will definitely return to this hotel by year end or beginning of 2017, not just because of its great rates but because of the staff. Many thanks to Cesar, Mariana, Sebastian, Silvia, Jonathan, and the rest of the staff whose names I don't remember for making my two-week long stay a very...
