I love a number of Rob's fresh items except for one, his Scotch Pies. It seems to me that the pastry recipe has changed. It is nothing like the pastry the pies used to be made with. While it looks okay uncooked the cooked version is very greasy and really nothing like the genuine Scottish recipe. I won't be buying them again which is a shame as I love Scotch pies. I also had a bad experience with some Snowballs, they were off and by that I mean the coconut had soured and the centre was a bit crystalized. Sadly, the price of the meat items has gone through the roof which means it will only be a treat now instead of a fairly regular purchase. I bought a few items and it cost over $200 which shocked me. PLEASE put prices on the products in your glass cases. Lastly, I may as well make a comment about the premises. I have to say the British paraphernalia that decorates the shop is all looking rather grubby as it has been up there for many years. The items could use a wash in degreaser or something to spruce them up again. As a previous retail manager, I can tell you that shop presentation is very important, especially in a shop that sells food! I genuinely want to see this shop continue but there are elements that are a turn-off so please rectify them and I, for one, will happily continue to frequent...
Read moreI'm a proud Leicestershire lad who has lived in Aus for 8 year. I'm from the Home County of the Pork Pie (a very short drive from Melton Mowbray, in fact) and I, unblushingly, consider myself a connoisseur of this delicious, regional, British speciality food. I was born and raised on pork pies and can say that Rob's are 100% top notch - great crispy pastry with well seasoned pork filling that is surrounded by delicious jelly. Well done, Rob.
-Bacon is literally the best I and my partner have ever tasted in Australia. - The fat crisps up something lovely in the pan. -English pork sausages: same as the above. -Irish sausages: same as the above. -Pasties&Bridies ^^ ^^
I'm so glad I found this place; I had all but given up on the prospects of a decent weekend fry up out here as the woeful sausages and "bacon" sold in Australian supermarkets seem to be species of some mutant distant relatives of the real McCoy that Rob makes.
Keep up the fantastic work Rob and staff and thanks for giving me a true taste of home, all the...
Read moreI was in Dandenong today so as a Brit from Manchester was excited to find a British butcher with great reviews. Stocked up on steak and kidney pies, sausages Fruity HP, After Eights and good old fashioned chunky cut marmalade. What got me really excited was their steak and kidney pies, sausages and scotch eggs. The lady told me everything was homemade so I had the scotch egg for lunch. Unfortunately it was very dry like eating tasteless cardboard. So disappointing. The steak and Kidney pies were inedible. The pastry tasted like the pie was made weeks ago and the filling was dry, full of gristle with hardly any kidney. I bought six and had to throw 5 out. The sausages were OK but nothing to write home about. It’s a little embarrassing that they are selling themselves as a British butcher as nothing I bought reminded me of home. I won’t be bothering to...
