Lighthouse Charters Narooma & Montague Island Discovery Tours with Wazza — Local services in Narooma

Although we stayed in Narooma for 4 nights in mid-October, strong winds kept us from attending the Montague Island & Penguin tour until our last night in Narooma. Wazza was extremely accommodating in the week leading up to our visit, personally taking our calls, providing weather forecast updates and advising of potential days for our tour. Even up until 15 minutes before our departure time, Wazza was checking the most up to date forecast, ensuring the safety of all passengers. Ultimately, Wazza decided to proceed with the evening’s tour based on the information at hand and his experience, with the remote chance of poor weather not eventuating. It was not long until encountered some whales playing not far off the coast. In addition to whales, we also encountered dolphins who happily played in the boat’s wake. Upon arrival at Montague Island, we were greeted by hundreds of seals. Sophie was tremendous, explaining the difference species as well as their behaviours, carrying on from earlier commentary on whales and dolphins. Once on Montague island, we were welcomed by national park rangers and volunteers, who provided valuable insight to the history of the island, and the important conservation work the national park service continually does on the island. We were given a tour of the lighthouse, the lighthouse keeper’s quarters, culminating with the return of penguins to the island at dusk. This review is no reflection on Montague Island itself—it was a fantastic scuba dive, and we were fortunate to have 15 m visibility on the day.

However, I was very disappointed with the charter’s service for several reasons. One of my friends rented a wetsuit for the dive and was given a 5 mm suit, which is unacceptable given that the water temperature was 16°C just after winter. He was freezing during both dives. It’s surprising that a dive operator based in Narooma doesn’t stock 7 mm suits.

Additionally, the dive master was unwell before the dive even began. By the second dive, he was too sick to join us and sent the group off on our own. While we were lucky that my husband is an instructor and could take over, this is extremely unprofessional. A replacement should have been arranged, or the dive canceled. Sending divers off unsupervised on a boat dive is a serious safety concern.

To make matters worse, our friend rented a tank that was only filled to 180 bar. This is unacceptable for a boat dive, where the minimum should be 200 bar. Since he was already struggling with an inadequate wetsuit, we swapped tanks to help him manage. Finally, charging extra for weights on a boat dive is not the norm, as weights are typically included in the package.

I cannot speak more highly of this company, the day for my family was an absolute pleasure! Ally (one of our snorkelling guides) was phenomenal! We took our 6 & 3 year old sons and by the time we reached Montague Island to commence our snorkelling with the seal's our little 3 year old had fallen asleep 😂 it must have been due to the expert behind the wheel. I thought "oh well I will sit this one out today to stay with our sleeping son" BUT Ally and the crew were amazing!!! Ally stayed on the boat with our little one whilst he slept and said go for it, enjoy 😊 Ally is also a kindergarten teacher - we were so thankful and impressed. The crew were also so amazing with my 6 year old son - he was a little nervous as he had not snorkelled before, they were so supportive and encouraging by the end of the tour he did not want to get out! Do yourself a favour and book one of their memorable tours - super professional, safe for any age and great communication.
