I believe a good place to start is to describe the state of my hair (hopefully this'll help those with the same hair condition as me). I have thick, dry, coarse, and half-curly and half-straight hair. When you have hair like mine, you'll do anything to make it smooth, shiny, and straight! It is by no means easy to cut, color or wash. To give you an idea, it takes approximately 2 hours to wash, cut and dry completely, so in other words, not very many stylists want to take the time and effort to deal with this.

That being said, it's been years since I had a good stylist after my previous one moved back to London. About a year ago, I decided to try Proper as they have good reviews. And might I say, they absolutely deserve good reviews! The staff here are welcoming, friendly, and professional. More importantly, I found the right person to care for my hair, Sue!!! She is so AMAZING! :)

With hair conditions like mine, it isn't always easy to achieve the look and style I want. Sue has been so patient with me and took time to understand my hair (I know that sounds silly but if you go see her, you'll get it!). I appreciate that she walks me through the process, tells me what to expect, and also whole-heartedly cares about giving me what I want while ensuring that it doesn't become too high maintenance. I was seeing an amazing independent stylist out of this salon. Unfortunately during my appointment yesterday I overheard one of the owners (Sam) saying some incredibly transphobic things ("my niece wants to be a boy now so she's using a different name and pronouns", etc for several minutes) while talking to one of his clients. My stylist was in the back mixing up my colour, I told her when she returned and she went to talk to the other owner. The other owner came over (sadly I didn't get her name), apologized to me and spoke to Sam about it directly. I refused to speak to him because I'm not interested in the apologies of transphobe. The other owner tried her best to make it better, even giving me some free product. However I felt incredibly uncomfortable and disgusted by the things I overheard. For a business with a trans friendly sticker in the window to have an owner who feels that comfortable saying such transphobic things is unacceptable to me. I was told that they are working on setting up an trans education session for the stylists, an idea which Sam had originally refused to consider. I am devastated to have lost a good hairdresser since I don't feel comfortable supporting any business that Sam profits off of.
