I went to Queen E to see Apocalyptica and Nita Strauss. It’s a nice enough venue and the bands were fantastic. However, I have never had such an awful experience at a venue before. We were in row two at the far right side. Everyone was recording and taking pictures (as you do), and about 20min into the show, the ushers started prowling the front 10 rows or so - I heard one usher say to the woman in front of us that she could take pictures but no video. Very strange, as there was no physical signs anywhere letting people know to not record but I kept that in mind and stuck to taking pictures here and there. About 5 min later I feel someone roughly grab my elbow and jerk it back and a women’s voice saying “STOP RECORDING”. I replied “we’re allowed to take photos?” She was either an usher or security guarding gate 6. She was very a large, heavy set woman with a partially shaved head. She quickly went back to her spot and I followed her and stated “another usher said we can take photos” and she yelled at me “put your phone away and watch the concert”. I just shook my head and went back to my seat, confused as to why she was so rude. I don’t mind not using my phone but for the next 40min there were about 4 people constantly on their phone taking pictures and video, including the woman directly in front of me. Anytime I looked back at the usher, she was just starting at me, glaring. Ok… weird. I turned around 3-4 times and every time she was staring at me. It was very unnerving and uncomfortable, and honestly I had a hard time enjoying the concert with her right behind me at gate 6.
At one point I went to the bathroom and when I came back to find my seat, the same usher basically body checked me (I’m not exaggerating) while pushing me backwards and said “GO BACK TO YOUR SEAT”. I said “I’m LOOKING for my seat! I’m in row two!!!” And she backed off and said sorry and walked back to her guard post. As we were leaving I glanced at her and she smirked at me.
I tried calling to speak with someone about this but no one answered and no one has called me me back.
I don’t think I will be going back to the Queen E in case she’s there. It really bothered me.
My SO said I should have shoved her back but A) she was much, much larger than me and B) I didn’t want to get kicked out after spending $300 on tickets
So I’m just letting people know to be aware of this particular usher at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, and if she bothers you to make a complaint while you’re there
Update: I emailed as they requested, and never heard back from them. My phone calls aren’t answered either. So again, if you are harassed by an usher at Queen E, please lodge a complaint while you are there....

Read moreAfter the long, quiet stretch of COVID lockdowns, I made it a mission to rediscover the joy of live performances — and I’ve been going everywhere for a good show! Big or small, from Langley to White Rock to North Vancouver... and of course, Queen Elizabeth Theatre is high on my list. I’ve already visited several times this year!
That said — I still feel a bit of lingering social anxiety in crowded places, especially when I have my child with me. The theatre was bustling, and when the classic “I need to go to the washroom” moment happened (as it always does with kids!), panic mode activated. The stairway leading to the restrooms is very narrow — only one person can pass at a time — and the line for the women’s washroom was completely blocking access for anyone else.
I froze for a second. How do I explain to every person that I’m not trying to cut the line — I just need to escort my child? 😵💫😵💫😵💫
Eventually, I told my son, “Why don’t you follow that nice gentleman ahead of us?” He looked unsure, but luckily, that very gentleman kindly offered to guide him to the men’s room and even brought him back out safely.
Honestly, I was so relieved and grateful I almost cried. He even told me afterwards, “He’s such a well-behaved boy — washed his hands and everything!” 💖
To that kind stranger: thank you. You reminded me that Vancouver is still full of warmth and kindness — even in the most unexpected (and slightly...
