We were downtown and needed dinner so we decided to try out Tokyo in April . On the table: Egg Bomb, Miso Soup, Dynamite Roll, Prawn Tempura, Veggie Yaki Udon and Red Omurice (Beet).
Egg Bomb: We havn't had many Egg Bombs, but compared with what we have had, this one was just OK. The nut crumbles were a good attempt at trying to dress it up but in the end, it didn't quite make the grade. Our server also forgot to put in the order for this and so we didn't get this until very late in the meal after I mentioned to her, " I thought I had ordered an Egg Bomb." She was very apologetic and brought us a complimentary bowl of Miso soup in addition to the Egg Bomb. It was the perfect freebie to throw in as the weather was cold and I was very happy to be given a hot, soothing liquid to drink.
Dynamite Roll and Prawn Tempura: Nothing outstanding but nothing bad either. Our girl was happy with these.
Veggie Yaki Udon: I could have left off the fish flakes on this dish to make it Vegetarian but I decided to go Pescatarian this time and keep the fish flakes.I love seeing the wiggly movement of the fish flakes! Veggie Yaki Udon may sound quite plain and ordinary to some but I found it very tasty and think that it's an extremely underrated dish. I enjoyed this Veggie Yaki Udon as much and possibly even more than any Seafood Yaki Udon or meat Yaki Udon that I've ever tried in my life.
Red Omurice (Beet): A bit on the pricey side but very flavorful. Omurice isn't something we've ordered often but what we've had so far has been very impressive, and this Omurice was the best one we've had yet.
Service: Good Parking: 2 hours of free underground parking at International Village Location: On the Abbott St. side of the International Village in...
Read moreTonight is the first time we tried this restaurant.. we ONLY ordered 3 dishes; Uniagi HSB rice, Omurice and tempura as appetizer. The waiter told us that the Omurice needs to wait for 25 minutes. Even though we were starving, we still said it is ok.
While we were waiting for our foods, the waiters have asked us a few times if we are ready to order. I believe that they also noticed that we were sitting there for a while already BUT there wasn't any food on our table. At the same time, I have also followed up with my orders.
Also, we noticed that they served the Omurice to other tables but just not to us. Finally, AN HOUR LATER, our Omurice arrived. I got to mention that it took them 45 MINUTES to serve our Uniagi rice and 50 MINUTES to serve the tempura.
The table beside us ordered their 3-4 plates including the omurice, and they finished them way before our first dish arrived. I asked the waiter why our order took 1 HOUR and for other people didn't have to? The excuse was because there was 5-6 Omurice orders at the same time so it took longer. Does that also mean there were too many people ordered tempura so my order took 50 MINUTES to come?
Service: Regardless what excuses they used. 1) the restaurant didn't provide an equivalent service to me compared to other clients. Biased. 2) they were very likely forgotten my orders then tried to make it up after I complained.
Food: 1) The long wait of the Omurice wasn't that impressive and doesn't worth to wait for ONE HOUR. 2) There was something not chewable mixed with the rice. 3) The sauce is the only taste of the whole plate. Don't know what the egg and rice they...
Read moreFirst time eating here (based on recommendation). Dined in. The dining area is small and crammed due to its angular nature. We parked a few blocks away in a parking garage because parking in downtown Vancouver is not fun lol. I personally don’t like using online menus but this place kind of runs on them. I wish the website had a better UX.
We got the Agedashi Tofu which was super good. Perfectly balanced with a tempura exterior, soft tofu center, and tasty dashi sauce. The tempura appetizer comes with 2 prawns and 4 veggies. Their tempura batter is great but I wish you could choose which veggies you got. For the main course my wife got the original omurice. This was her first time having omurice and she loved it. It’s also a hearty amount of food.
I got the teriyaki beef roll and the mango shrimp roll. The teriyaki sauce was a huge let down and there was way too much cucumber packed in to where it was almost drowning out the beef. Maybe adding carrot in there and less cucumber would help. Also, this roll was so big you had to take at least two bites per piece, and because it’s a beef roll, it all falls apart after the first bite. The mango shrimp roll was fantastic if you love sweet & rolls with fruit (which I love trying often). The crunchies on top really did make it more exciting. It kind of tasted like a smoothie. I enjoyed it but wouldn’t say it’s in my top rolls reviewed.
Overall, I think we came in with higher expectations from those who recommended it. The food is good but we were just expecting… more. Worth the try but not necessary if you are just visiting the area for a...
