There are several historic temples along Tai Ping Shan Street in Sheung Wan including the Kwun Yum Tong (or Kun Iam) Temple. This is one of a fair number of temples dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy around Hong Kong. It is situated just a few metres across the street from the smaller Shui Yuet Temple which is also dedicated to the goddess Kwun Yum. The temple is open from 7.30am to 5.30pm daily. It is a single hall with an red tiled exterior. Most interesting is the delicately carved choi mun hanging above the entrance. This is worth a couple minutes to enjoy. Within the temple you'll find expected shrines, deity figures, hanging incense coils, incense burners. The interior area is small but worth a few more minutes to view before moving on. If you enjoy seeing historic temples and ancestral halls, you can combine a visit to the Kwun Tong Temple along with the Shui Yuet Temple which is basically just across the street and the historic Pak Shing Temple around 50 metres west of here.

Kwun Yum Tong Temple on Tai Ping Shan Street isn’t much of an attraction, but it happens to be the oldest temple in Central district. Dedicated to the Taoist Goddess of Mercy, Kwun Yum or Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy), the temple was founded in 1840. The story goes that it was built to house a piece of driftwood washed ashore on Hong Kong Island that was deemed to be an incarnation of the Goddess and carved into her likeness by a master craftsman from Foshan.
