Western Market came into business in September 1844. Western Market later comprised of two separate blocks: South Block wrecked and North Block the current "Western Market".
The South Block at Sovereign's Street Focal was underlying 1858.Vendors were expelled and moved to the Hollywood Street Brief Market in August 1980. The Victorian time frame South Block was destroyed from that point and supplanted by the Metropolitan Committee Sheung Wan Mind boggling, opened in 1988. The Edwardian time frame North Block and the Hollywood Street Brief Market were shut right now and merchants were migrated to the new complicated.
The North Block, more modest and more smaller in plan, was protected and revamped via Land Improvement Company. This structure, of the Sovereign Anne Recovery style of the Edwardian time frame, was implicit 1906 as an augmentation of the then existing Western Market. It was the previous site of Harbor Office that had been moved to a recovery region in Focal Locale for a bigger space to adapt to its rising responsibility. The old structure of the Harbor Office was pulled down to construct the North Block of Western Market.
It worked as a food market until 1988. The structure was harmed during the development of Sheung Wan station, and remediation works were embraced afterward.Half the site was rezoned to work with a proposed extending of Morrison Road, which would have required the structure's destruction. Read moreA decent effort was made to restore this old marketplace building but it fails to catch much attention as there is very little on offer in its walls that you can't find in more convenient locations during your stay in Hong Kong. In our opinion, while appearing attractive from the outside, the Western Market fails to deliver in what it has to offer and this is why it doesn't capture more attention and popularity with visitors.
This attraction is out of the way of most other attractions, located near the Hong Kong Macau ferry terminal and is not convenient to visit if going to/from the ferry terminal as you'll likely have luggage with you.
Also, as many street markets with curios can be found in the nearby Hollywood Road area and with the trove of restaurants on offer in Soho, there just seems little reason to make the effort to find this attraction unless you are in Hong Kong for a long time and have seen everything else on your to...
