Disappointing Steak Experience on Christmas Eve
On the 24th of December, after a polite inquiry, we managed to secure a table for three at dinner, despite being initially informed of full bookings. Curiously, despite the initial claim of being fully booked, there were consistently available tables throughout our visit, which raised suspicions about the restaurant's booking policy.
The steakhouse is situated on the first floor, accessible by an elevator adjacent to the Hobos Restaurant and Cafe, with additional staircases at both the side and rear for access.
After being seated, we ordered drinks and selected our meals: two 240g medium steaks and one Christmas Menu option. A minor disappointment arose immediately as only one size of steak was available for order. I had hoped for a larger 300/350g steak that evening. Additionally, we ordered a Carpaccio with Truffle, which was satisfactory.
The complimentary bread was tasty and well-prepared. The starters, including the Christmas Menu starter, were also enjoyable, building our anticipation for the steaks.
However, when the steaks arrived, they were drowned in sauce, accompanied by a few potato wedges attempting to pass off as fries. The first cut into the steak revealed cold meat soaked in sauce. Another attempt to cut into the steak confirmed it was indeed too cold. We raised the issue with the staff and received replacements. Unfortunately, the new steaks were overcooked, resembling well-done rather than the medium we had ordered. The texture resembled more of German goulash than a steak.
Regrettably, this experience left us dissatisfied. I wouldn't consider returning, and I cannot recommend Hobos Steak House, especially for their steaks. Perhaps their other dishes might fare better, as neighboring tables opted for non-steak dishes.
I'm awarding two stars for the appetizers and acknowledging the manager's attempt to rectify the situation. However, after reading subsequent Google reviews, it seems this experience is consistent with others.
Better go to PIZZA HUT and eat the 7 EUR all...
Read moreService was terrible. It wasn’t busy , there was more staff then customers when I arrived so I didn’t expect poor service. Staff were standing around chatting. After waiting for 15 mins for my drink I went and asked for some water. Following another 5 minutes wait I went to the bar to see what was taking so long. There was 3 staff standing at the bar having a conversation.
My drink was sitting there, so I said can I just take my drink please? The waiting staff , rolled her eyes , and picked up my drink and walked out , taking it to my table. Lunch arrived , the starter arrived after the main and after putting my plate down the same waiting staff that was chatting at the bar knocked over the salt pot and left it without picking it back up. rather then walk around the table to serve my friend, the waitress leaned over the table , her armpit just hovering my food.
The food looked like it an out of a tin can. I ordered spaghetti with octopus. The spaghetti was an over cooked dry lump pasta that has honestly put me off eating pasta since that meal ten days ago. The diced octopus I shared with a cat that was sitting by me table. I total cost of lunch was just under €50 and not worth paying €5. I have eaten at hobos steak house and I rate that 5 stars , this however is not the same at all. It’s not worth more then a 1 star review and even though I was very disappointed at the time , I have waiting over a week to write an honest...
Read moreYou can easily miss the entrance to this place since it's not on the ground floor despite all the posters of mouth watering steaks spread around the square. You can also easily mistake Hobo's steak house for Hobo the bistro cafe occupying the entirety of the sidewalk and square below the Restaurant.
Having said that, once you find the elevator that takes you up one floor you will be transported from the loud and crowded street to a clean and quiet atmosphere of the steak house where you can enjoy the view of Finokoudis beach as you feast on a tasty albeit expensive cut of meat.
Hobo's has an impressive list of choices spanning from New Zealand beef, to USDA, Argentinian, and Wagyu beef. That's not to say that there chicken and pork items are any less impressive.
Portions vary from 250 grams to 600+ depending on the cut, but prices also will vary from €30 to €80 and above per plate.
Despite the steep price the steaks were genuinely well prepared and tasted great. We tried the US T-bone and the Rack of Lamb. Both delicious.
The choices of wine and dessert are typical and good as well.
