We got a ride to see the northern lights. The guides were amazing, caring and hospitable. They were happy to answer all our questions and tried to make the experience as fun as possible!
We were offered equipment (helmet, balaclavas, gloves and a jumpsuit) so that we are safe and warm during the ride. All the equipment is optional, with the exception of the helmet which we had to wear.
The ride stared from the offices near levi and we rode some time in the back roads of the town, until we were far enough to avoid light pollution. The snowmobiles looked like they are in good condition and worked well. The ride itself is interesting, through the woods in a path just for us. I discovered I am not a fan of snow mobiles - but that comes down to personal preference.
We got to a frozen lake where we where able to take more pictures and walk around. This is a truly remote area and the experience is truly humbling. We then enter a hut where there was fire, sausages and drinks. The hut is clean, the sausages are a great touch and once again, the guides did their absolute best to entertain and keep us company!
One of them was periodically checking for the lights and once they were visible we went out again.
Overall, no complaints. This is an expensive activity but you do get the best out of it. If you are lucky enough to see the lights like we were, then it's all the...
Read morewent on the 3 hour northern lights tour and absolutely would not recommend this to anybody. I wouldn't blame them for not getting a chance to see the lights the night we went but the remainder of the tour was equally disappointing.
Considering the northern lights are what they're advertising they should have a far better contingency plan for what can be done on the nights they aren't out, considering how pricey the tour is.
We had about 40 people on the tour and the tour guide/line leader was towing at least 10 kids behind her and our average speed throughout the tour was 8 km/hr.
she has to stop multiple times to let some kids off in order to make it up a hill.
After about an hour of snowmobileing at a snails pace, it was clear the lights would not be seen. instead of continuing on, the guides took to a warm field where they built a small fire and we had a cup of hot juice.
This is essentially what we paid for: a hot juice and a cold fire. We couldn't wait for it to be over. Had more fun driving my rental car home than I did on the snowmobiles.
Absolutely disgusted that they had that many people crammed into a tour that was catered to the little kids the...
Read moreWe had the most amazing experience of a lifetime driving our own dog sleds. We were a group of six adults and one child (age six). We were picked up at our accommodation and driven to a place to pick up appropriate gloves (which were very warm). We then drove a little further out to the forest where we were met by the fabulous family who own the dogs. We were led through the forest to meet our dogs who were so excited to get going. We took a 10km ride, swapping drivers at the half way point, through magical forest and open landscapes. We were guided by the dog handlers who were on a snow mobile out at the front of the group. The dogs did a great job following the snow mobile. Each dog sled held one adult driver and one adult passenger, the child sat with the adult passenger on one of the sleds. After the ride we were treated to hot juice and biscuits around a fire in a tent before making out way back out of the forest to the transport back to the hotel. Thank you for the wonderful experience and very friendly hospitality. The family who own the dogs had their kennels in the Tonttula Elve's village. When we come back to Lapland we will definitely...
