Saint Dionysius of Zakynthos (1547 - 17 December 1622) is a saint of the Eastern Orthodox Church. He lived and worked in Zakynthos from the middle of the 16th century until the beginning of the 17th, and was also bishop of Aegina. Today it is one of the most popular modern saints and is a patron of the city of Zakynthos. Agios Dionysios was born in 1547 in Aigialos, that is, in the coastal zone of Zakynthos. His world-famous name was Gradynigos (often referred to - incorrectly - also as Draganigos) Sigure. His family was wealthy, with Western European ancestry and Catholic ancestry, and owned large tracts of land, while his parents took up an aristocratic role in the Venetian wars against the Turks. His father was Mucius and his mother Pavlina, while he had two other brothers, Constantine and Sigura. According to local traditions of Zakynthos, which are not historically confirmed, Agios Gerasimos was the contractor. From an early age, his family provided him with a Christian upbringing, and he also hired a teacher named Weatherman to impart to Gradynigus both knowledge of door-to-door education and "church letters." We do not know who his teachers were afterwards, but he certainly acquired a significant education, at least in the context of the time, since he had excellent command of the ancient Greek and Latin languages in addition to Greek and Italian, and a rescued letter with commemorations on Gregory highlights the wide theological education he had...

Beautiful Orthodox church decorated nearly fully from floor to ceiling. Nice heaven of calm to take a break from long walks on this beautiful island. Entrance is free and you can buy candles to light and make a wish.

A beautiful, wonderful orthodox church that is DEFINITELY worth visiting. Im a catholic and truly fell in love with this place, it is so known for the saint Dionysios casket (forgive me, dont know the actual word)! Wish i knew it earlier. The church definitely catches your attention, and it is emotional to pray there, even just for a bit. I have no regrets, and the people taking care of the church are also very respectful and kind. The man working with the candles was really polite and was truly trying his best to help me out if i had a question, even taught me some stuff about the praying of the candles. It was beautiful, could stay there all day, you dont have to pray anything, just for the candles if you want to. I felt safe :).
