That curly-haired woman at the counter was by far the worst person I encountered in Italy. I stopped by to buy food souvenirs as I wrapped up a two-week trip, and yet, while ringing up my items, she treated me as if I’d done something wrong.

She scanned each item, throwing them like basketballs, even jam and spreads in glass jars. I felt humiliated, my face was red from embarrassment, and she never once looked at me, as though wishing the items would break.

It screamed, "I don’t like you." I’d heard about Asian tourists facing the exact same treatment in Europe, but it was shocking to experience it firsthand. A single moment of disrespect can leave lasting harm; I regret not calling her out then and there.

Quella donna dai capelli ricci al bancone è stata di gran lunga la persona peggiore che ho incontrato in Italia. Sono passato per comprare souvenir alimentari alla fine di un viaggio di due settimane, eppure, mentre passava i miei articoli alla cassa, mi ha trattato come se avessi fatto qualcosa di sbagliato.

Ha scansionato ogni articolo lanciandoli come fossero palloni, perfino marmellate e creme in barattoli di vetro. Mi sono sentito umiliato, con il viso rosso dall’imbarazzo, e lei non mi ha mai guardato, come se sperasse che i prodotti si rompessero.
