Kappo Ryokan Kannawa Bettei — Local services in Beppu

The value vs the price was well balanced. I strongly recommend this place. My experience below was 65000 JPY per room per night.

Location : A little bit far from Beppu station. You have use bus/taxi to get here. Though the local attraction "Hell springs tour" is 5 min walk away from this place. Beware, no stores around the hotel.

Room : This ryokan-style hotel has only 6 rooms. And all rooms are well dintanced each other. You will seldom see others during your stay. The room's structure aren't as traditional as 200 years old ryokan-style hotel in Kyoto. But I can still say this place consists of well above average Japanese style buildings and small Japanese garden. I'm impressed that the stream in the garden uses hot spring water and the steam from the stream at night.

One remarkable point was two hot spring baths dedicated to the room were there. One is in a normal bathroom and another is in outside. You don't have to worry about what should you do and shouldn't do at Japanese style bath. Just enjoy the experience as you want. This is a huge plus. Also there is a shared bigger outside hot spring bath. You can lock it while you use it. You can seldom lock and occupy such shared large hot spring bath. This is also a big plus if you travel with your family.

The room I stayed was about 600sqft / 30sqm size. You use one room as bedroom / dining room. (The maids take away dining tables after you eat and put Japanese futon beds. Then take away futon beds before you eat breakfast) Essentially, once you arrive your room, you don't have to leave at all till the next morning.

Food : Excellent traditional Japanese ryokan style food + Oita prefecture's local fresh ingredients. Two or more maids will serve your food in your room one dish by one dish in timely manner. (both dinner and breakfast) I would say this was one of the best food and service for this price I had so far. Very good dinner and breakfast. You won't be disappointed. Don't think this place's quality is the standard among Japanese ryokan hotels in Japan.

Service : Excellent hospitality. I happened to left small thing at my room when I was checking out. The clerk kindly informed me that I might left something at the bath while I was checking out. I believe they started to clean the room as soon as I left the room and notifierd the...

We spent a long time looking for a traditional Ryokan in Japan, especially after having an unforgettable stay in Hakone 10 years ago. This time, we chose Beppu, known for its natural hot springs—and it was the perfect decision!

This Ryokan gave us one of the best experiences of our lives. Everything exceeded our expectations. The staff were incredibly friendly and made our stay even more special. Toyada-san took very good care of us during our stay.

We stayed in a beautiful Japanese-style room with futons (very comfortable!) and had two private onsens: one indoor and one open-air. The outdoor bath felt peaceful and secluded, surrounded by trees and bamboo sticks. It was the perfect size for two. The Ryokan also has a larger open-air family bath available without reservation if it's not in use by other guests.

We also enjoyed a Kaiseki dinner with Oita Wagyu steak and a delicious breakfast. Honestly, it might have been the best shrimp sashimi (Ebi) and steak I've ever had!

Another great thing is that you can book online, which is rare for traditional Ryokans with private onsens. And even with the language barrier, communication was smooth thanks to Sato-san who handled our reservation.

Just wow. We stayed here for one night at the end of our 2-week trip to Japan, and it was the most rejuvenating and peaceful way to end our trip. There were good amenities, spacious rooms, and well-maintained baths. But above all else, the service was so so SO incredible that made the stay worth every penny. The manager and attendant were both so thoughtful and made our stay so comfortable. The food was also a highlight— we were completely STUFFED after both dinner and breakfast!
