Simply Outstanding.
For reference, my wife and I came here on our honeymoon for one night. Neither of us had been to Japan before but we wanted to experience a classic Ryokan with onsen and Kaiseki dinner during our trip.
The experience started prior to arrival with a pickup in a nice Mercedes from the Shuzenji train station. Our driver knew no English but he made quick work with a translation app and all was good. He drove us to the ryokan and we checked in early because the room was ready to go. At this point we found out we were the only people staying there that night so we had the place to ourselves. We also met more of the staff at this point and some of them spoke varying amounts of English. They brought us a welcome card, tea and sweets which was very delicious and left us to get settled. We also found out that they had just reopened in February after extensive renovations and this was likely part of the reason we were the only guests.
The room itself was exactly what I imagined. Beautiful tatami mats, futons, basic but very high quality furniture,a beautiful scroll and flower arrangement, and lots of little touches of luxury scattered about. The view out to the garden was meditative and we opened up the doors to listen to the waterfalls.
After that we decided to explore the town and it was a nice activity for a couple hours. After this we came back and soaked, then soaked again, then soaked again. At this point we put on our yukatas (robes) and got ready for dinner.
Dinner was amazing. We had never had Kaiseki before and it was wild. I think I counted 21 unique dishes served just to the two of us. We had it with some great sake recommendations from the chef. In all those dishes I think there was two things that our western palates didn’t love but everything else was awesome. I also appreciate that the chef wrote out an English menu so we knew exactly what we were eating. The whole time the staff was watching us to ensure all our needs were fulfilled and they did a great job. One staff member spoke better English and she was able to give us additional info on the dishes we were eating which was greatly appreciated. When we were done the whole team walked us back to our room and wished us a good night sleep.
We did a couple more soaks and played cards before bed then switched to the provided pyjamas before drifting off to the sounds of the babbling waterfalls and the frogs.
Morning breakfast was a pared down version of dinner and it was also very delicious. After that we checked out and they drove us back to the train station after a long and heartfelt goodbye.
The price might seem high when you book however I think it is justified with the amazing meals and next level service that you just can’t get at a typical hotel.
Thank you to Togashi and the whole team for the amazing stay! Your rykoan was an absolute highlight on our honeymoon. We hope to...
Read moreWe had the pleasure of staying two nights at this beautiful hotel in Shuzenji, and it was one of the most relaxing and memorable parts of our Japan trip. After the vibrant energy of Tokyo, this place felt like a peaceful retreat.
The property features charming little villas that blend traditional Japanese aesthetics—like cozy tatami mats—with modern comforts. The layout was spacious, a real luxury compared to typical Japanese city hotels. The garden surroundings added to the serene atmosphere, and everything from the furnishings to the amenities was thoughtfully arranged.
One of the highlights was the two private onsen baths, one of which is located outdoors. Starting and ending the day with a quiet soak—surrounded by nature—was an absolute dream. I already miss those peaceful morning and evening dips.
The staff embodied the warm and attentive Japanese hospitality. While their English was very limited (which is quite normal in Japan), they were incredibly kind and eager to help. After a small hiccup with a fire alarm in our room, they even gifted us some sake as an apology.
The hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from the "downtown" area of Shuzenji. Parking was conveniently available right in front of the hotel, they also offer a pick up service from train station and even Tokyo airports. They do seem to offer food on-site, but we didn’t try it, so I can’t comment on that aspect.
One tip: if you have a car, consider driving up to Darumayama for an early morning or late afternoon hike when the weather allows it. The nature is breathtaking, and the views of Mt. Fuji are unforgettable.
All in all, it's a wonderful place to reset and enjoy a slower pace of life—an experience we...
Read moreThe hotel is a little gem. On Google it shows 3 stars, which is far too few. The hotel is still very new and has a very appealing architectural mix of modern and traditional. We spent 2 nights there. We had a kind of apartment with a bedroom and a living room, as well as a bathroom and outdoor pool (private onsen).
For dinner and breakfast we were served various small culinary works of art, which were very delicious. You definitely shouldn't miss the delicious mushroom miso soup and the eel.
My husband had to unexpectedly go to the doctor and then to the hospital because of a thrombosis. The staff were excited with me that he would get the right treatment in time. As this took much longer than expected, the hotel manager offered to go and pick up my husband from the hospital together, because there were no taxis back to the hotel at that late hour.
We have already seen some hotels in the world that are beautiful and this is certainly one of them. In terms of attentiveness and hospitality, however, this hotel stands out. It is rare to see such friendly people who enjoy...
