I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan of udon, but when my wife decided that's what she wanted for lunch, I was excited to try it out.
The restaurant is very small, and we had to wait a few minutes for a table, but the clientele eat quickly and move on, so tables opened up quickly. The wait staff provided us with an English menu with pictures, making it very easy to order and enjoy our visit. Oddly, the menu text is accurate, but the pictures are not (several dishes showed tempura squash included, but the text made no mention of it, and the wait staff said there was no squash with some of the dishes).
Compared to BC, Canada, the prices were not particularly good value, but the prices seemed in line with udon in Japan: 600Y for ultra basic udon dishes up to 950Y for chicken, squash, and fish roll tempura with udon.
The broth was not too salty, and the noodles were quite good. The tempura chicken was excellent, but was served on top of my soup, so parts of the chicken were soggy instead of crispy. The bonus was a small amout of umeboshi (sour plum) sauce that added nicely to the dinner. Unlimited chilled green tea was a nice bonus on a hot day.
Four stars for what it is. Personally I don't care much for udon, and wouldn't choose to eat it when I'm eating out, but compared to other udon I've had, and eating out in general, I think it is...

We arrived a bit late, but that probably reduced the waiting time, as we only encountered 1 person before us.
The menu is simple and straight forward. It took about 10 minutes to serve our dishes and while usually like the udon a bit harder, my wife really liked the softer noodles served here.
The shrimp tempura was delicious as was the beef. The broth was light and flavorful, but I did help things with the chilli spice available at the table.
One thing I also found notable is the cold tea (oolong?) provided free of charge, instead of the usual water only.
Great place, if you are looking for a simple, but tasty...
Read moreThis was my first time visiting the restaurant. It's located on the left hand side as you walk from Kiyomizu-Gojo station to Kiyomizu temple, so it's a very convenient location. The inside of the restaurant is small, but it's clean and nice. This time, I ordered the beef and chicken tempura bukkake udon. The udon had a chewy texture typical of Sanuki style udon, and the chicken tempura was crispy, which was a good match with the chewy udon. The beef was quite fatty, which I didn't like very much. I recommend this restaurant for people who want to have a quick meal on the way to...
