Forget the new, trendy TikTok ramen shops around Kyoto. This place is the real deal. This is a down-to-Earth, authentic, old school, grudge-y ramen shop, and I would die for it. You simply sit down, order A-Set or B-Set, and then my dude behind the counter works his magic. No gimmicks, no tourist-y menus or mascots, easy to miss, the appliances show decades of hard work, and the seats are full of locals. Perfection.
The ramen itself is unique. My dude behind the counter puts a Mt. Fuji mound of green onions on it, yet the green onion flavor doesn’t overpower the rest of the dish. The broth is rich and savory. The karaage chicken is juicy and tender, golden brown fried. He includes a little Japanese mayo, cabbage, and salt with it. The rice is soft and moist. You add a little rice seasoning on it yourself and it’s perfect. Self-serve water next to the entrance.
I went to this place all the time 6 years ago during a study abroad trip, and I had to come back today to try it again. I was so thankful it survived the years following 2020. Everything is still the exact same since it was back in 2019, let alone 1980. You simply cannot replicate this place’s atmosphere back in the US.
I will (and have) wholeheartedly recommend this ramen shop to all my friends and family that visit Kyoto. Like other reviews mention, it’s not a spotless clean environment nor is it overly brown-nosing tourists. That’s what makes this spot the best...

Read moreRamen Fuji GoJo was a short 15 minute walk from Hyatt Regency in Kyoto. Very small, inconspicuous place but don't pass it down. The Ramen with Pork was phenomenal. Gozas (Pot stickers) was my favorite. Huge portions of Ramen. Get the Regular size. Absolutely recommend for food, price ($14 for 2 people), local clientele.
Small, barstool set up. Giant boiling pots of Ramen and broth stirred by the chef. Napkins are under your counter. Gets very busy around 7 pm. On busy main GoJo Street. Pay attention to crossing signals, bikers, motorbikes as well as cars. We walked at night and...
