What a gem this place is! We stopped in on October 9th. After the owner heard us talking outside while taking photos of the exterior of the shop, he came out and welcomed us inside. We ended up staying and chatting with the owner for about 45-60 minutes all while he was pulling bag after bag of freshly roasted coffees from the back for us to smell. I ended up taking a bag of Ethiopia and a bag of Papua New Guinea roasts back home to the US and also got a fresh cup of coffee while we stayed and chatted. I can’t recommend this place enough. It is a very small shop but the quality of the product and friendliness of the owner is next level. We even got chatting about Japanese whisky and the best place to buy bottles in Kyoto (I’m now a member of Liquor Mountain lol). We ended up staying so long chatting that we were almost late to our next event and quickly had to call an Uber to get us there in the nick of time. The coffee is fantastic and I love being able to drink it at home every morning as it reminds me of a great time on our trip in Japan.
10/10 highly recommend if you love good coffee and...
Read moreWish I had taken photos! I saw this place on Google reviews and stopped by quickly to pick up some coffee, but ended up staying for about half an hour talking to Morio-san, the owner, who REALLY knows his coffee and is incredibly welcoming.
As far as coffee goes, Morio-san has an almost endless variety of beans available (so many he had to look carefully through the cash register to find the ones I was buying !), all carefully roasted--the place smells great-and he is very knowledgeable on each. I bought some Costa Rican beans along with some Tanzanian after quite a lengthy discussion, and am really looking forward to trying them.
Fuku Roastery also serves coffee in the store (which is very small) and I tried some espresso there before buying... fantastic.
All in all, an absolute must for coffee enthusiasts if you're...
Read moreWe stumbled upon this place one morning recently walking around Kyoto, and we absolutely loved it! It feels like something out of a Murakami novel. Beautiful interior, owner really friendly and helpful and speaks great English. He clearly knows his coffee and has the most amazing coffee machine I have ever seen!
He told us the name Fuku means happiness and is named after his family's Russian Blue cat (EDIT - I mis-remembered! It is a British shorthair. Sorry, Fuku!) There is also an amazing old radio in the shop (80+ years old!) that belonged to his grandfather and still works. I got an iced latte and also bought some beans to take back to NYC. The owner was so kind and generous! I will definitely go back on my next...
