Written by Jikaku Daishi Ennin, a high priest of Mt. Hiei during the Heian period. It is made of one piece of wood and is said to be the oldest standing statue of Amida Nyorai with Kuhonraigyoin. Fudo Myoo and Senju Kannon are the guardians, and the shrine is open to the public only one day a year.
“Nodding Mida” saves women Jikaku Daishi Ennin, who was studying under Saicho, made a statue of Amitabha Tathagata from the sacred wood he found at Naega Daimyojin, and when he tried to complete it by inserting a byakugo as the principal image for monks practicing on Mt. Hiei, the Tathagata cut off his head. I waved and refused. When asked,
Please go to Kyoto and save all the people, especially the women,'' the Tathagata nods three times, which is why he is called
Nodding Mida.'' The statue of Amida Nyorai was enshrined in the Jogyo-do Hall of Mt. Hiei for a while after that, but in response to a message in a dream from the Buddhist Priest of Disciples that said, ``You should hurry down the mountain to Kyoto,'' it was moved from Mt. Hiei, where women were not allowed, to the villa of Higashi-sanjo-in. He was transferred to Shinnyodo and became the founder of Shinnyodo."Fudo Myoo (left)" Heian period The Nenjibutsu that saved Seimei's life It is written in "Shinnyodo Engi" that when Onmyoji Abe Seimei met an unexpected death, the statue of Fudo Myoo that was enshrined in his house spoke directly to King Enma and brought him back to life. The Buddhist Temple is one of few Buddhist Temples in Japan which do not take photos of the main worship halls. Though the Temple has its uniqueness of beauty in green-tree courtyard, gardens, and stone-slate step, it is NOT a well-known temple in Kyoto, and, thus, not a crowded temple. Therefore, the visitors can enjoy the quietness for the beauty of the Temple.
The Temple is located at the far-right midpoint of Kyoto University and Heian Jingu Shrine, and it can be reached by Kyoto City Bus No 5 or on foot. The Temple is free for entering, although garden and inner chamber do require entrance fee, $ 500 Yen and autumn blossom/ fall-Maple-color season does require an ever higher fee to enter the Garden,...
