One of the best food tours we've ever done! We did the Kichijoji tour in Tokyo with Ken and absolutely loved it. He was the perfect guide; hospitable, interesting, entertaining, considerate and very generous with his time. His english is perfect and we were able to learn so much about the food, the culture and the people of Japan. Thanks Ken - you were the best! Kichijoji was a gorgeous little town that we would never have thought to visit - so pleased we did, it was delightful, and very different to Tokyo. Plenty of food was offered on the tour and there was lots of variety. I especially loved how we visited all kinds of places and shops and restaurants and bars and parks, it was varied and really interesting. Even if you're not a big 'foodie'' there was something to interest you. What stood out was the passion and knowledge of our guide - and the network of contacts he had in the community - to be able to introduce us to the artisans who have been so proudly producing their goods for generations - and who were so generous with their samples and stories,...it was pretty special. Thanks Culinary Backstreets - we'll be looking you up for each...
Read moreThis was by far the highlight of our trip to Japan. The neighborhood of Kichijoji is not well known to the typical tourist but after speaking with Japanese people throughout our time, it is clearly the destination for locals for food and shopping. Everyone local was so exited when we told them we went to this part of Tokyo.
The neighborhood was amazing and the places we went to eat were incredible. Highlights included the mother and daughter duo who have had a rice cake shop in their family for many years and the miso shop where the chef made us multiple small bites with different forms of miso paste. All of the things we sampled I would not have necessarily known to try or known about their history if I had not gone on this tour.
I can’t say enough things about our wonderful guide Elly. She was very knowledgeable and really fun to spend the day with. if I went back to Tokyo, I would repeat this exact same tour again it...
Read moreMy best friend and I participated in this tour 7/29/2025. It was an amazing experience and our guide Elly was simply fantastic. It ended up just being the two of us for the tour, which ultimately was perfect as we were able to really chat with our tour guide and the locals that she introduced us to throughout the day. As someone who found the Tokyo food scene a little bit overwhelming as a non-Japanese speaker, this tour was a fantastic overview of many of the interesting and delicious foods that this city has to offer. It was reassuring to be able to trust the places that we were going both to have safe and delicious foods. My favorite parts included being taken to small, family owned businesses that have been around for generations and learning about how they create their products. 10/10 would recommend., And will likely be taking a tour in another Japanese town while we are on...
