You know you’re in for an interesting day when your journey begins under a clown. Not metaphorically...a literal clown sign grinning over an escalator. I wasn’t sure whether I was about to find snacks or trauma.

Down I went, half-expecting to emerge in a '70s time capsule filled with forgotten salarymen & vending machines selling mysteries. Instead, I stumbled upon a spotless underground supermarket — Summit — glowing like a fluorescent temple of temptation.

The air was thick with the scent of freshly baked bread & mild existential confusion. Locals moved with surgical precision, loading carts with melons the size of toddlers while I stood frozen in the aisle, marveling at the variety of mochi snacks. Somewhere between the bakery and the bento section, I realized I’d accidentally discovered one of Yokohama’s greatest secrets: a grocery store that feels like it was built to test foreign self-control.

I went in for a look. I came out with a custard bun, a bag of wasabi peas & a renewed faith in the power of air-conditioning.

Up above, Noge Shōtengai buzzed with tiny bars, old jazz joints, and streets that look like they were drawn by someone with a mild hangover. But it’s down below — under the smiling clown — where I found true happiness: affordable snacks, perfect lighting, and a sense that maybe, just maybe, I’d joined the ranks of locals who know where the real Yokohama...

I was visiting family and stayed at the hotel across from Sakuragicho Station and Colette Mare and this awesome grocery store! The seafood pizza was amazing, and all the ready to eat meals and the pastries. I may have to stay there again, as it was so nice to have everything right...
